Wayne Lai on Winning Over Life

Three-time TV King winning actor Wayne Lai (黎耀祥) currently appears in TVB anniversary drama, Will Power <法外風雲>. Portraying Wilson Yu, a goal-oriented barrister who specializes in handling inheritance cases, Wayne said that the character was one of his toughest roles yet – tough not because of the role’s dynamic character, but because he found it difficult to portray the role in a way so the audience could see Wilson Yu, and not Wayne Lai.

“I try to be different with every performance I do. The problem is whether or not the audience would believe that. To put it simply, even if you do a very realistic portrayal of a lawyer now, you would have already portrayed too many characters in the past, and the audience would end up having too many impressions of you. I need to constantly come up with ways for them to believe that I am the character they are watching in the drama.”

The risky Wilson Yu only values the outcomes and steps on the edge of the law to win a court case. But after experiencing a transient ischemic attack, Wilson starts to reevaluate his own life.

Wayne remarked that he has passed that point of reexamination. Right now, it is all about keeping life at a steady pace and humbly embrace new opportunities. “What’s most important in life is not the fame. It’s about winning over my own life. This is a value I have set for myself ever since I was doing supporting roles. Life does not have a clear definition. How you think of yourself and how others think of yourself will also play a very important factor in defining your life. When people say I earned full marks in my acting, I will not treat it as if I have everything in the world.

“It’s like what I tell my son: we cannot compare achievements with others. You may be rich, but Li Ka Shing (李嘉誠) is even richer. And then Bill Gates is even richer than him. It’s impossible to compare. We are all capable and fortunate in our own way. It’s not about how much we earn, but about how much we have sacrificed, so you can live with no regrets.”

Though Wayne wants the audience to see him as a different person every time they turn on the TV, Wayne is in fact, quite the opposite of what he wants to be portrayed as in real life. The 49-year-old is nostalgic, and he does not want a change. After three Best Actor wins and nonstop endorsement offers, Wayne’s wife, Julia, remains to be his manager and assistant. After fame, Wayne still spends his free time grocery shopping in the wet markets, a hobby practiced since childhood.

“Why should I change? Work is just one of life’s subjects. Of course, receiving full marks on one subject in my report card makes me very happy, but there are still more subjects I need to work hard on. There’s nothing for me to be too feel complacent about.”

    1. Agreed that Wayne shares some great insights on life as well as on acting in general. You guys should read his book — lot of great quotes in there as well.

  2. I always find Wayne and Kevin to be those who answers a question. Love his quotes especially the part abt li kashing. Anyway he has a chance for a fourth win with will power.

    1. He is really outstanding in Will Power but the chance for him to be TV King this year is not high because there are many strong opponents such as Francis, Lawrence, ….

    2. Agree, he always “really ” answer the question thoughtfully .

  3. Not only is Wayne great in acting, he also has thoughtful insights on life.

  4. He just gives the impression that he is a brilliant person on top of being a great actor. Also read somewhere that he regularly treats the entire crew to dinners and never loses his temper onset. It’s just nice to read accounts of people who get rich and successful don’t forget the people who got them there.

  5. Wayne Lai is an outstanding actor. I really enjoy his acting as a lawyer and a stroke patient in the series Will Power. Wish he will be in the list of top five best actors if he can not get the fourth TV King.

  6. Wayne Lai is outstanding actor. I really enjoy his acting as a lawyer and a stroke patient in the series Will Power. Hoping he will get some award this year.

      1. This guy just has alot of support because he is a very lucky and a good actor he is the best in tvb today but Wayne playing a stroke patient wasn’t convincing at all

      2. Louis Lee seems try to avoid the exaggerated acting for her role as a stroke patient that she looks not like a stroke victim at all. On the other hand, Wayne Lai looks like the more real stroke patient. I am a nurse working with many stroke victims and no one looks like Louis lee.

  7. He seems to be the person he has always been portraying on screen, being intelligent, sensible and yet not arrogant. Think he is one good guy in real.
