Wayne Lai Urges Audiences To Support Junior Actors
Three-time TV Best Actor winner Wayne Lai (黎耀祥) attended a celebratory dinner banquet with the cast and crew of TVB’s anniversary drama Lord of Shanghai <梟雄>, which aired its last episode on Sunday. Two days ago, Wayne won a “Favorite TVB Character” award at the TVB Star Awards Malaysia 2015 for his performance as Kung Siu-shan in Lord of Shanghai, but lost the “Favorite TVB Actor” to Captain of Destiny’s <張保仔> Ruco Chan (陳展鵬).
“I’m not sad about losing at all,” said Wayne. “This is a fair result. Audience vote takes up a huge portion in determining the results. Ruco also did really well in the drama. He’s a very experienced actor, and he absolutely deserves the award. There are different voting and judging standards everywhere.”
Wayne, who was propelled to leading actor status after starring in the 2009 award-winning drama Rosy Business <巾幗梟雄>, said he does not expect himself to win TV King at the upcoming TVB Anniversary Awards.
“I’ve already won [Best Actor] before. At this point in my career, winning another is just icing on the cake. In fact, I hope to see other colleagues win it because these awards are huge encouragements. I honestly don’t care. I already won it three times.”
So is Wayne saying that he does not wish to win more? “I can’t say I’ve won enough. There’s no reason for me to deny an award or an encouragement, but to be honest, this award is no longer as significant to me as it is to others because I’ve already won it.”
Wayne then said he would rather have junior actors win the award, and urged the Hong Kong audience to be more accepting of newer and younger actors. “We need more junior actors in this industry. The audience should also be accepting of newer actors. We always hear complaints about seeing the same people, but it takes time to cultivate a new cast. Without the new, how can there be an old? The audience needs to be more accepting, and we also need to give newer actors more opportunities so they can move up. This way, the industry can develop more healthily.”

Captain of Destiny has beaten Lord of Shanghai to win the Best Actor and Best Drama awards in Malaysia. Hopefully, the Hong Kong judges are as affluent as the judges in Singapore and Malaysia to select Ruco Chan the 2015 Best Actor of TVB!
It has proven that Ruco Chan is a better actor than the 3 Uncles in Lord of Shanghai …Cheers!
Netizens at social media are lusty, arm with evidence they can bring a person down from grace! Never fix awards!
@yummysukiyaki I don’t think ruco’s acting is better than the 3 lead actors in lord of Shanghai .( just my opinion )
@yummysukiyaki
Sorry. Anthony Wong, Kent Tong, Wayne Lai and Kenneth Ma did pretty good in their roles in Lord of Shanghai.
Ruco Chan made it more worthwhile in Captain of Destiny, he carried the drama but to act better than those four. No way.
@yummysukiyaki
Ruco Chan is better than Anthony Wong?
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Fanboyism at its finest.
@anon Hohohoho Everywhere is supporting Ruco Chan strongly to be the H K TV King except TVB is still playing fixing awards game ,,,Boo!!!!
Wayne Lai can shut his gap, social media netizens are cheering for Ruco Chan not him nor the other 2 Uncles!
@yummysukiyaki As you can read, Wayne is very supportive of the younger generation. Ruco still have a lot to learn from him and Anthony. But he is def. a better actor then Kent and Kenneth for sure.
@happybi No point arguing, go to Facebook, the Poll is authentic, TVB cant deny it otherwise they will be jeered and booed, viewers know well…Yeah!
TVB can present foul mouth Uncle Wong a Senior Citizen award for his effort in LOS, he is only a H K movie King, not the best and his fame is going downhill hahaha
@yummysukiyaki Not trying to argue with you but I don’t see why there is a need to bash the other people just because you want Ruco to win. This is a turn off for people who are fans of both Ruco and the other people who are nominated.
@yummysukiyaki ruco is better than Kent tong and way better than Kenneth. He cab learn from,Wayne and Anthony.
On roger vs ruco, roger is more versatile. But bowie trumps them both.
Finally, I think Anthony deserves the award. His acting was great in LOS and sorry to Ruco’s fan but Anthony’s acting way better than Ruco’s. Anthony was able to act out more in depth of the character while Ruco is still kind of more of a surface acting although he is improving. To be fair, let’s not make Anthony not fit to win the award because of his rude comments sometimes. This is about acting and not about ‘good character’ award or whatever.
And the awards in Singapore did not have LOS included, as it wasn’t aired when the award was hosted so can’t compare. LOS will only be nominated in the Singapore award next year. The awards in Malaysia was kinda unfair to the 3 veteran actors because LOS have not finished airing, there’s many hesitation in voting for the series before the ending is reveal (most of the time ending determined if the drama is good or not) .
If you are wondering why the three veteran artist are not that well received on the surface in Singapore or Malaysia. It’s because most of the audience that voted or attended the events are mostly the younger generation and naturally artist such as Ruco is more well received. So when it comes to voting, even if they appreciate Wayne’s acting or Anthony’s acting very much, they would ultimately vote for their idol in this case Ruco so that he could win. And, most of the time mature audience(as in age) would not bother to vote and most of the time will also not attend the awards as the felt that it was a waste of time and money. Sorry, but this is the harsh truth.
Hence, to be fair, the judges should give the award to Anthony he truly deserves it.
@alien the difference is that Hong Kong audience get to watch the broadcast live or have many interactions with the artist during promotions event. However, fans in Singapore and Malaysia only get to see them once in awhile or not at all so defiantly they would vote for their idols. So that their idols would attend or do more promotion event in their countries. If their idols are not well received in their countries it means no to minimal trip to their countries. And veteran actors are more of a sure attend kind so they are given less attention.
@alien @alien You are absolutely right. I have seen the results of Astro’s (Malaysian) awards in the last three years. The top awards were all given to young artistes, but were never given to those good veterans who acted well. In other words, the awards were given to their idols no matter they could act or not.
Sheren Tang and Wayne Lai won Best Artistes awards in TVB Hong Kong two years in a row. Their good acting in “Rosy Business” and “No Regrets” were well recognized and accepted, but they never won any awards in Malaysia in those 2 drama series.
Ruco Chan’s acting is acceptable, and is better than many current actors’ in TVB. However, if we compare his acting with Anthony Wong’s, Kent Tong’s, or Wayne Lai’s, his is not up to that level yet. Of course he was the best actor among the lead artistes in “Captain of Destiny” when he was compared with Tony Hung, Grace Chan and some other newbies.
I think those top Astro awards are called :
My Favorite TVB Drama
“Captain of Destiny”
My Favorite TVB Actress in a Leading Role
Kristal Tin and Nancy Wu, “Ghost of Relativity”
My Favorite TVB Actor in a Leading Role
Ruco Chan, “Captain of Destiny”
and NOT “Best Actor”, “Best Actress”, and “Best Drama Series”.
@orchid123 It is true that the award names are “My Fave…” and not “Best….” but everyone seems to think they are the same thing. i consider Roger a veteran (acting for many many years and at least 50 yo). He won last yr so yr statement is not entirely true.
@isay Perhaps not in all awards, but 90% of those awards.
@isay I agree with @orchid123. Considering that Roger had been going around asking for the award and stated how important it was to him that year. It was a high promotional news, where he also stated that he wished to receive his 3rd Favourite actor in the Malaysia award. He even wore the special attire during the event with his children faces printed on them during the Hong Kong one.
The three last nominees were Raymond, Roger and Ruco. Raymond left the station so not possible for him to get the award. Ruse of engagement was like film 3 years back before the award which might be one factor that votes were lesser.And Roger was like pleading for the award. I don’t know the percentage of audience vote for that year and judges percentage, the award percentage might be different this year. Rogers vote might have been slightly pulled up by the judges and rest by audience. Although Roger might be older, but he have that cute baby face and I even thought he was in his 30s! And that year clearly favours him and he does have some fan base as you can hear audience shouting his name during the announce of results. So we can safely say that majority that shouted voted for him.( not all the audience maybe the 1/8 voted for him, most shouted are most likely not in others fan base other than Roger one for obvious reason )
It’s a little different case for Wayne. Considering that Roger was brought to fame earlier hence he would have more fans and some watch his series while growing up. While Wayne was brought to fame only a few years ago from rosy business. Before he was just Kelefa or cast supporting role without much breakthrough. He was already middle age when he was brought to fame so his looks was not at the best state. However, Roger is benefited with a baby face and was discovered much earlier, hence he might have accumulated more fans throughout the year. Of course not to compare to the younger artist who have more of an active fan base.
Considering that he is attending and is one of the ‘Big Brother’ of the station. And his performance was indeed great in BHWS. BHWS was one of the series that was the talk of the year so naturally Roger have a higher chance of winning. Compare to ruse of engagement which was a frozen series coming out of the warehouse. It was an ‘old ‘series hence some people would not vote for it Nor did it make as much noise as considered to BHWS due to its ending(like I mentioned in my post). Hence, judges vote might have pulled up Roger’s vote as well as some audience(neutral or non-biased) who voted for Roger. Some fans might also know that their idol stand lesser chance hence decided to vote for Roger as a “Hotter choice” with more chance of winning.
This was one of the rare exception.
I understand that you’re a huge fan of Ruco but do not be overly defensive or expect everyone to support Ruco. Ruco’s acting is indeed great but not up to Anthony’s standard yet. You have rights to not agree with me but everyone have their own opinion. Please don’t be offended by me =)
@alien i appreciate your post but i dont really follow some of your points. Nevertheless i agree that everyone is entitled to a different opinion and preference. No one can say you’re wrong if they don’t agree with you. Ruco may not be the best actor to everyone but there’s no denying that he’s improving in every drama. For me that’s good enough.
@isay Thanks appreciate your comment too. Cheers!
@alien Cheers to you too 🙂
@alien No point arguing, go to Facebook, the Poll is authentic, TVB cant deny it otherwise they will be jeered and booed, viewers know well…Yeah!
TVB can present foul mouth Uncle Wong a Senior Citizen award for his effort in LOS, he is only a H K movie King, not the best and his fame is going downhill hahaha
@yummysukiyaki Facebook poll already means it’s like my Favourite or who you wish to win. So it’s unfair to determine who wins because of the amount of vote or who has larger fanbase. It’s like Aaron Kwok losing the award to Feng Xiaogang. Everyone thought Arron would win. Me myself thought too. Of course younger artist/idol have more active fanbase,who are actively on social media. Unlike veteran actors who contribute to the snowbiz industry, with a more silent fanbase. I have no problem with Ruco performance but it seems like you’re making it look like Ruco can’t afford to lose. If it turns out that he receive the award I would congratulate him, and not be a sore loser.
I have the rights to support or give my opinion on who I think deserves or should get the award. I respect that you support Ruco and that you support him for the award. In no ways am I bad mouthing Ruco or defaming him. So please respect my opinion.
i have enough of the 3 uncles. please don’t vote them in for TVB best actor…of course my idol Ruco Chan should get the TVB award in HK…he truly deserves it.
@janet72 At the social media many viewers are supporting the new age TV King Ruco and he deserves to win the H K Best Actor award.
TVB…game is over, dont fix awards!
@janet72
More like a popularity contest than an acting contest. This is why there are judges having a stronger influence on the outcome after judging by their performances not because they like them.
@gingermessiah Not necessarily so. Judges are people with feelings too. They can like one person better than the other and so that may influence their final judgement. In any case, we don’t even know who are the judges in the “professional” panel.
@isay
You do have a point, but then at the end of the day we can’t really decide on who is the best actor/actress. Even if we use the rating/viewer-ship of the drama to determine the best drama and best actor/actress, people will still not be happy.
That’s why I prefer to leave it to the “experts”. 😀
I believe the panel are mostly the producers, directors and senior actors/actresses. Think there was an article about that a few years ago but it may have changed since.
@gingermessiah aye aye. Let’s just hope they are fair.
While I think 11th Prince is a great and unique role, but COD is not such a great series overall. By comparison in terms of production, casting and script, LOS a better quality drama than COD despite its popularity.
@elizabeth
COD is only good because of Ruco. His fanboys and fangirls will support him no matter what. Lord of Shanghai is arguably the best series TVB has produced in a long time, with a strong cast, plot and location. I don’t even watch TVB, and even I had to watch it for Anthony. That was the only series I watched this year. There’s no competition which series is better. LOS wins hands down.
@anon yes i totally agree with you! LOS wins it all!
@anon Totally agree with you. There is no competition required …………..”Lord of Shanghai” wins it all. Every artiste acted very well in this series, and the plot was good.
Lord of Shanghai had lots of good actors. The spy girl was horrible though, she did not know how to act at all.
@mike
It’s not a TVB series if there isn’t at least one MAJOR f-up. 😉
Ruco’s acting is good but not excellent yet compared to those veterans who won 3 times best actors.
“this award is no longer as significant to me as it is to others because I’ve already won it.” Well said!
Um, ok…nothing wrong with being happy for Ruco winning BA for COD in both Singapore and Malaysia, but honestly, no need to bash Anthony, Wayne, and Kent, as they are excellent actors in their own right. If their acting is truly bad, then that’s one thing, but if people are bashing them merely because they are “old”, then that’s totally uncalled for (plus it makes no sense anyway to base an award on someone’s age rather their acting skill). Let’s have some respect for the veteran actors here – I’m sure Ruco wouldn’t want you guys bashing his seniors, especially the veterans whom he has the decency to respect and learn from himself.
@llwy12 well said. I like Ruco but IMO Wayne, Kent and Anthony (can’t stand him though) are excellent in their own rights. No need to bash them.
Wayne: Love his response. He has class.
@llwy12 yes no matter how good Ruco is, we should respect the 3 veteran actors because they have contributed a lot to the entertainment industry. They should be well respected because they are more experienced and young actors should learn frrom them. Anyway congrats to Ruco and keep up the good work even though I’m not his biggest fan!
@llwy12 Agree hands down.
Wayne, Anthony and Kent are seniors and had proven that they can act regardless if you don’t like the person in real life, their characters or age. They are in a higher generation/level than Ruco. His aim should be to be like Wayne, Anthony and Kent’s level sort of speak. Stop degrading them so just to put Ruco on a pedestal. Doing so just making Ruco look bad, because it’s indirectly saying he’s goal is to suck since Wayne, Anthony and Kent are sucky. Lol.
Ruco’s competition is against the younger/newer crops, like Kenneth, Ron, even Tony now (I’ll even glomp Moses in this pile). Out of that, Ruco is definitely better than them IMO.
@jjwong @llwy12
Agreed, I am not a diehard fan of any of these actors in discussion, but to say that Ruco is better than these 3 is ludicrous. I hope this person’s judgement in real life isn’t as terrible as their assessment of entertainers online.
Ruco still has to work hard to reach Wayne and Roger’s level, especially Roger’s acting is superb. However, he’s definitely better than Moses and Kevin already. Congrats Rico fans.
@genxx11 Ummm not necessarily. You may prefer Wayne and Roger but not everyone does. My take is that if you put a bunch of good actors together, it’s difficult to say who’s “better” than the other since acting is very subjective and a matter of personal preference. Good acting cannot be quantified. Personally I think Ruco is a better and more versatile actor than Wayne and Roger. That’s just my opinion and his fans’ opinion.
@isay ok, Wayne’s acting can be subjective but Roger’s? Who else can portray Ah Wong so adorably, look at Charmaine’s Fah Che, it’s very tough.
@genxx11 Sorry I don’t understand yr logic. What I wrote also applies to Roger. Good acting is subjective. I didn’t watch Charmaine’s Fah Che (caught bits and pieces so can’t really comment but heard that it was bad). Did you watch Ruco in ATV drama Stupid Child?
@genxx11 In fact, I could not stand Roger Kwokk’s acting as Ah Wong. He was popular for that character because it was something new. When Charmaine Sheh acted Sister Fa in a similar manner, people got tired of that kind of acting after watching two of Ah Wong’s drama series.
Roger Kwok is a good actor, but definitely not in Ah Wong’s character. I think Ah Wong just gave me the impression of being silly, but not a person with low IQs.
@isay
Have you watched any of Roger Kwok’s work from the 90’s? If you have watched his best work (imo, all of them from the 90’s), you would agree that Rogers is a better actor than Ruco.
Ruco “acts” better because he’s given better roles. Rogers has been typecasted in the last 10 years to act in more comedic roles. We all know that it doesn’t require much range in acting to play those roles.
@anon Actually, not just the 90s – going back even to the 80s, Roger’s acting was already excellent and quite versatile. He did not need the ‘Ah Wong’ character to prove his worth, as he had already proven it way before that in my book.
And to all the Ruco fans out there: please do your idol a favor and stop bringing down veteran actors in efforts to justify his worth. I’m sure you know that most audiences already recognize Ruco as being a good, solid, consistent actor who is levels above most of his juniors and the current newer crop of artists – those are technically the artists he’s ‘competing’ against, not the established veteran actors who have already proven their worth through their own talent/skill/merit and don’t need a TVB award to justify themselves. So basically, stop doing Ruco a disservice by continually comparing him to veteran actors and trying to justify why he’s supposedly ‘better’ than everyone who came before him – all that succeeds in doing is discrediting the acting talent he has and the hard work he put in over the years….
@llwy12
I am a great fan of Ruco but I totally agree with llwy12. Ruco has a lot to learn from the veterans and he has himbly said so himself. He is a very good actor but not the best yet. I just wish that overly enthusiastic fans can recognuse that and stop bashing other artistes. This disrespectful behavoiur is certainly not becoming of Ruco’ s fans.
@anon i started watching roger only in early 2000s. I can’t call myself a fan but i do like watching some of his dramas, not all though. I liked him in Last one standing but as i type this i have difficulty recalling the others (oh now i remember him in Ah Wong too). He has his share of bombs like everyone else (i remember that one with joey yung but can’t recall the title; that was god awful but it introduced kevin cheng to me. The other one with Fala was terrible too). So I’m sorry i cant agree roger is that great an actor who’s better than ruco. Roger is good in certain dramas but not all. I don’t agree with the comment that Ruco “acts” better becos he’s given better roles. It’s vice versa – he makes the role better becos he’s acting them. Can you imagine any other actor as carson or 11th prince? Roger has also been given some good roles eg the one in last one standing and black heart white soul. I often wish ruco had been given the Matt role. No doubt he would have rocked it just as well as roger.
@isay lol Ruco’s better than roger’s ? NO WAY
@ivan since when did i say that? I hv avoided saying here all these while who’s better than who as i respect that we all hv different taste and opinion . Pl accord the same respect. Pl read my comment in above para again carefully.
@ivan In my opinion, Ruco is definitely much much better than roger. Roger cannot deliver clear dialogue. Whenever he speaks, it only reminds me of Ah Wong. Roger is also weak in action drama and he is no way comparable to Ruco.
@isay
“i started watching roger only in early 2000s.”
Well here’s the problem, just because you’re unfamiliar with Roger’s work does not make Ruco a better overall actor than Rogers.
@anon Likewise, can i ask you if you’ve watched all of Ruco’s dramas to conclude that Roger is a better actor? We can argue till the cows come home and no one can CONCLUSIVELY state that one is better than the other. There’s no way to quantify good acting. Don’t force your opinion on others. I’ve made it very clear that what I’ve commented about Ruco-Roger is just my opinion. Who are you to tell me I’m wrong?
@isay
I am not enforcing my opinion and views on you at all. At the end of the day, it doesn’t make any difference in my life who you like over the other. I am saying that you lack knowledge of Roger’s background and talent to fairly compare him to Ruco.
@anon to me it doesn’t sound like you hv much knowledge of ruco’s works either. I used to like Roger but i find his acting getting stale. Doesn’t matter if he was great in the past. Until bhws i think roger wasn’t in very good or memorable dramas. I don’t know why this has digressed to Ruco vs roger. Both are good but i prefer ruco any day.
“The audience needs to be more accepting, and we also need to give newer actors more opportunities so they can move up.”
audience needs nothing, its the new actor that needs to show what he can. if he is good(ruco) then opportunities will follow him, if not then he will not come far in this bussiness, but until now i cant see any new young actors of tvb that have that kind of charisma like tony leung or andy lau or louis ko thats worth to cultivate to become a big star.
@kolo Haha. Agree with you. New actors have to EARN their place. Tvb did not promote Ruco, but he captivated audience by his good performances.
However, of course can’t compare newbies to legends. It shows tvb acting class was important. Why tvb colse down their classess?
@kolo you may have to eat your words. I see that potential in Ruco. He’s a fine actor and i wish he could be given the opportunity to act in movies. Tbh i hv watched tony Leung andy lau and louis koo in old tvb dramas but was never impressed with them (sure i found them handsome in their tvb days). Ruco is the only actor I’ve ever liked from tvb in a long long time (used to like some of them like kevin moses roger but never to this extent as with ruco; I’m not a star chaser). I think he not only has looks but substance as well.
@isay i actually mean ruco is a good actor, he has a good package to come far. although you said that you never impressed with the three big star when they were in their tvb days, they have the charisma that could immidiately attracts your attention that you think this guy have potential to become big star,( like grace chan) even they are not good in the beginning of their carreer,thats what i miss with the young tvb actors of today.
@kolo tbh I’ve never felt that star charisma with tony Andy and louis though i watched their dramas during their heydays with tvb. To me only Chow yun fatt and the late leslie cheung had that x factor.
@isay agree cyf and leslie were absolutely grand masters of the showbizz. im really happy to have got the chance to watch and listen to their movies and songs in my youth.
@kolo Louis is better in movies… when he was in TVB, his acting wasn’t the greatest… very stiff.
tony and andy were great though.
@happybi agree that louis acting is quite stiff in the beginning,that changed since a step into the past he showed more emotions and still retain his coolness. andy lau is an absolute idol of his time,and tony is a charming movie king.
I think TVB Star Awards made a wise choice in calling those awards as:
My Favorite TVB Drama
“Captain of Destiny”
My Favorite TVB Actress in a Leading Role
Kristal Tin and Nancy Wu, “Ghost of Relativity”
My Favorite TVB Actor in a Leading Role
Ruco Chan, “Captain of Destiny”
In that case, those awards were given to the MOST FAVOURITE ARTISTES AND DRAMA SERIES, and NOT THE ARTISTES WITH BEST ACTING OR BEST DRAMA SERIES.
@orchid123 true
@orchid123 Autually the hk awards also call them as such- 最受欢迎 not 最佳 (fave vs best).We just can’t seem to wrap it round our heads that they don’t mean the same thing.
@isay Hong Kong does have Most Favourite Artistes awards too, but they are not the ones with Best Acting skills. Hong Kong has both …… 最佳Best Actor (TV King), 最佳 Best Actress (TV Queen), as well as 最受欢迎 Most Favourite Artistes awards.
@orchid123 yes you’re right. My bad.
@isay Most Favourite Artistes are also known as a consolation prize to actors who didn’t managed to clinch on the TV King award. Such as Chilam’s case where he lost the TV King award to Dayo Wong.
Lord of Shanghai was shown too late for the awards. CoD has the best timing. The awards for Malaysia is much more earlier than HK, so there’s not much time for them to judge on LoS.
I think LoS is much better drama and plots and acting. But it takes a few episodes to like LoS, as shows based on that era can be quite boring.
All of a sudden it become Roger vs. Ruco! I am fan of both both if I have to choose, I’ll pick Roger!! Always a fan of him. Actually Ruco is very similar to Roger as in they both can play both good and evil role. Except I think Roger is more versatile but it may be because Ruco doesn’t have the opportunity that was given to Roger. Hopefully will get to see Ruco cast in better series with good female lead please!
@happybi Lol, I’m not sure why or how or when it had become Roger vs Ruco, but like you, I choose Roger over Ruco. I like them both. It’s just Roger has more experience and showcased his acting for much longer time and in more difference roles. IMO, it’s unfair for Ruco to be pitted against Roger. They’re just in different era/generation. Ruco is good and will become great in the future, but he’s not in the same league as the others vet (yet). He’s not ‘seasoned’ (yet).
@jjwong Well said and totally agree.
@jjwong Well said. Both are not the same era and it is unfair to compare Ruco with Roger who has years of experience and many memorable roles under his belt. In time to come, perhaps Ruco could be as successful as Roger though it is still early to tell yet. Ruco is good but in showbiz, u also need luck and timing on your side. He has not a defining role yet, hopefully he will get one in future.
Between Ruco and Roger, I pick Roger too as he has acted well in comedies and dramas. I had enjoyed many of his shows.
@happybi yup yup agreed. Ruco doesn’t have the face to match certain roles, so it can be difficult to call him versatile. Roger has a face that blends in while Ruco’s stick out, so Roger has an advantage there. Plus, Roger has so many yrs of experience behind him. Ruco has maybe half of it though I do think Ruco studies his characters more and tries to really master his persona when he acts. I wouldn’t put the two of them on par with each other.
@coralie I hv to disagree on that. Ruco is very versatile and can take on any roles. During atv times he did comedies as well as serious dramas. One of his most memorable was acting as an autistic man in Stupid Child. In tvb he took on baddie as well as good guy roles and everything in between and nailed each of them perfectly. He can also do action roles and look perfectly convincing. I can’t think of anyone else as Carson and in the latest AFWFW he has action scenes in every episode. Perhaps his face “sticks out” becos he’s too handsome. His versatility also extends to his ability to sing well. If that isn’t versatile i dont know what is. Anyways can we pl stop comparing the 2? They both hv their own merits and i used to like Roger too (actually i still quite like him out of all the other tvb actors ).
@isay to each her own. I can’t imagine Ruco playing Roger’s previous characters but I can imagine the other way around (if only Roger was younger…he looks too mature now.) But I agree, both has their own merits.
@coralie yes to each her own. I can imagine ruco in Roger’s role too and not vice versa.
@happybi @jjwong Goes to show how much of an impact Roger’s portrayal of Ah Wong had, since most people seem to only remember that role and judge his acting primarily against that. Makes me grateful that I started watching Roger’s series back in the 80s and throughout his career so I can have a better appreciation of what type of actor he truly is. I definitely agree with the sentiment that it’s unfair to judge an actor’s overall talent (or lack of it) based on only a limited selection of their works, as it’s not a true reflection of what their acting is like. This is one reason why I hate it when people try to compare artists across generations (i.e. the Ruco vs Roger comparison in this thread), especially when the comparison is a lop-sided one that 1) doesn’t take into account both artists’ entire repertoire/body of work and 2) doesn’t take into account past history/environment and circumstances. It’s like comparing apples to oranges – an impossible comparison of course, yet people still continue to make it. What’s worse is when people try to use something as superficial as an award as a ‘gauge’ to judge whether someone is a better actor/actress over someone else (as ridiculous as it sounds, I’ve actually heard people try to argue that such and such TVB actor/actress from the 80s/90s is not as good an actor/actress as someone else because he/she never got the TV King/Queen award – an argument which those of us who know anything about TVB history will know is baseless due to the fact that the awards thing only started in 1997).
In any case, I’ll get off my soapbox now, as I’ve said enough about this topic already….plus the awards are especially meaningless this year anyway, since most of the series and performances were lackluster, so to me, who gets what award really doesn’t matter…
@llwy12 Well said!!!
For me a little comparison is not bad. It just annoys me why Ruco die hard fans think it’s OK for them to step on anyone who was nominated with him. Not necessary as it only make people dislike Ruco because of these fans.
I like Ruco and I think he is a good actor. He need better opportunity as in a good script and a good female lead!!! But at the end of the day, still will pick Roger!
@llwy12 I have a feeling that most of very vocal Ruco-fans are very young. The younger generation seems to be a bit more opinionated and aren’t afraid to voice/type it. Now, I’m not saying they’re all young or that older people aren’t opinionated or that we’re old as dirt, lol. It’s just younger kids (I was one myself) are very attached and defensive to the celebs they like. So I’m not surprise they’re solely use Ah Wong as a comparison. They probably haven’t seen Rogers in the 80s or even 90s series.
Awards in general are becoming meaningless. It can be but not always a cause-and-effect to the quality of their acting. Even in the US, Academy or Emmy really aren’t the best of the best. They’re just merely one of the bests. As I stated before, many acting legends who are highly regarded by others in their industry have never won an award. That doesn’t mean they’re not a good or best actor. They don’t deserve being dismiss just because they’re award-less or old as I’ve read some posts suggested. Lol. Yes, awards are a nod to their performance. It can be an encouragement. To me, they’re most likely get them more jobs and higher pay more than anything else.
@happybi Oh yes, Ruco is in dire need of good female lead. He has been plague with mostly mediocre-at-best ones.
Agree, quite pointless to compare them.
I like Ruco and think he’s a good actor too. Some people just have the charisma and star quality from the get go like Roger, Andy, CYF and Tony….while there are other who have to work their way to gain more experience. They all have their own uniqueness and quality….some fit in one role better than other.
Btw, compliments go to TV King Ruco Chan, its not easy to gain overseas fame…Cheers! The 3 uncles have yet to obtain this grade hahaha
TVB had expected high viewership for LOS with the 3 big guns acted but it flopped…Bloop! TVB has many good uncles can perform like them, needless to invite uncles Wong n Tong!
@yummysukiyaki LOL u are really a Ruco super fan
@yummysukiyaki You discriminate against them because of their age.
@unknown IKR?? How ridiculous, lol.
Old doesn’t mean they can’t act or can’t act better than the younging, good looking or hot favorite among the viwers. Having a butt load of fans and winning some sort of online poll don’t guarantee they can act. In this case Ruco has fans and can acts, so yay. However, to discredit the said vets (i.e. Roger, Wayne, Anythony, etc) are so unnecessary. I don’t understand why Ruco’s die hard fanboys/girls are so keen on putting others down just to “prove his worth.” You can support Ruco at in poll and awards gracefully. Why can’t they recognize that he can be their idol and others can be better than him. Emphasizing how good he is or what is good about him, instead just saying he’s better than so and so. Then again, fanboys/girls wouldn’t be called that if they can see ‘clearly’ lol. I guess an idol can’t do no wrong in their eyes…
To say Ruco is the best of the best just because he had won 2 awards this year and has fans at the poll is like saying Jennifer Lawrence is a better (best even) than Meryl Streep or Eddie Redmayne is better than Tom Hanks. You can be good and win awards, but there’s always “yat san bei yat san go” (there’s always a higher mountain). Recognize that fans! xD
Another thing I don’t understand is Wayne even said to support the younger generation (Ruco and co), so why Ruco’s fans have the need to bash him? Wayne is on your side people! -_-;
@unknown Nope! The 3 Uncles acting skills are a thing of the past hahaha Ruco Chan is a new age TV King…Yeah!
@yummysukiyaki: Please stop bashing other actors…on their acting or age. You are obviously a Ruco fan and so am I. But your bashing of other actors is really doing Ruco a disservice. Just support Ruco without bashing others please !!
Talking about newbie and junior actors, Anthony Wong, in one interview, specifically brought of the name on newbie actress Winki Lai (賴慰玲). He said she’s very smart and quick in response, and she can handle both comedy and serious drama. He compares her to Carol Cheng.
This is big compliment. Carol Cheng was known for her great acting in her prime days.
http://zhongwen.astro.com.my/Channels/JiaYu/ArticleDetails.aspx?articleid=6006
Note: Winki Lai played young Angie Cheung in M Club and played Kenneth Ma’s sister in LOS.
@kidd Wow, that’s cool for Winki to get a nod from a vet. Good for her!
How did this post end up being a Roger-Ruco comparison? Both are great actors in their own right. I am a huge fan of Ruco, but I don’t dislike Roger either. Just neutral towards Roger.
Like what @isay or others have said, acting is subjective and cannot quantity who is better than the other. One man’s meat is another man’s poison.
@coralie: I have to disagree with you re Ruco not being able to take on Roger’s roles. To be fair, Ruco is still young, very athletic and has good physique. Hence, he can take on physically-challenging roles such as Carson in ROE, Sam in BK1 and the new drama AFWFW. Roger can’t take on these roles at his age now. Ruco can also sing pretty well, in addition to being a great actor. So to me, this is versatility. I grew up watching TVB dramas, and frankly, I don’t remember Roger taking on such physically-challenging roles even when he was at Ruco’s age. Ruco has acted in a great variety of roles including playing baddie, good guy, comedic, mentally-challenged (autistic)etc . So I am pretty sure Ruco would be able to take on Roger’s role in BHWS. He may portray the character differently from Roger though…as both actors are great in their own right. Sometimes I wish Ruco is given Roger’s roles/co-stars in his career. Coz this poor Ruco has been given many not-so-great roles (eg in Outbound Love, Slow Boat Home, Reality Check, All that is Bitter is Sweet) but he was able to make all these roles stand out by his great acting. He studies each character he portrays and gives his best regardless how big/small the production is.
@yummysukiyaki: are you the same sukiyaki who’s active in tvb.com forum? If yes, I can see that you are a big fan of Ruco and extremely vocal in voicing your opinions, likes and dislikes. I remembered you did say you are young and still a student when some Ruco-hater wrote that all of Ruco supporters are si-lai (housewives, aunties). I can see the enthusiasm and your eagerness to show your support for Ruco but frankly, there is no need to slam/discredit other actors to show your support. I’m sure Ruco does not want his fans to slam/discredit or show any form of disrespect to his fellow colleagues. I must admit that sometimes I am over-zealous in my comments about how good-looking Ruco is, how (almost) perfect or how good/genuine he is as a person. But I would usually be mindful about slamming others. We don’t have to slam/discredit others to show how good Ruco is. He is just good in his own right. But nevertheless, you are entitled to your opinion and social media allows freedom of speech. But if we are not careful of the things we say or write about others, we may end up doing Ruco a disservice.
@lml1977 I stated earlier that I can see Roger in Ruco’s roles if only Roger was younger & though I didn’t mention this, it’s obvious Ruco works out while Roger doesn’t care. I don’t consider Ruco good looking. He has a very noble aura and he does stick out but I wouldn’t consider him good looking. It’s like saying models stick out cus of their looks, but I’m sure many can agree not all “sticking out” is good looking. But I can see you’re a major Ruco shipper so discussing personal preferences is pointless. To each her own, my friend
@lml1977 Can’t agree more. Acting is subjective. Am true to my own feeling. Ruco is the only actor in TBB who can move me to tears, not any ‘great’ veterans ‘in depth’ acting. Just see so many are captivated by him-his fans increased by more than 200,000 after COD, and that shows his portrayal of 11th Prince is successful. He has that charisma which is more important than looks, and of course, he’s good looking.
Instead of having a commotion about wether a not Ruco is gonna get TV King. Why not discuss who is getting TV King? Atmosphere is so tense in the intense commotion and comment slamming each other…
Personally, I’m getting bored of Nancy and Kristal getting the award, I don’t find GOR that entertaining and it doesn’t correspond with its high ratings. (Correct me if I’m wrong, dropped the drama after awhile)kinda boring to me… This year, I don’t find any actress extra outstanding. For TV Queen, I support Alice Chan. I would have supported Tavia too if she was to be nominated for her role in Eye In The Sky but sadly it was for MLOR.
But most likely Liza Wang would receive the TV Queen award. Hopefully, if that happens, favourite female character goes to Alice Chan.
@alien You and I share similar sentiments with the exception of Tavia. I like her better in MLoR than EitS.
This year has indeed been bland as far as series and actresses pool. No show or actress have stood out or are memorable for me either. GoR is overrated, and that baffled me. It’s not even overhyped since I don’t remember any when it aired, lol. It was just all of sudden around awards time, it won this and that… So weird.
On the other hand, LY is so underrated. I enjoyed that series. I think the turn off for a people were the slower pace, more dailogue instead action-y and not so much ‘idolness’. I even though Linda did well in the series. At the very least, her character was more interesting than Kristal’s and Nancy’s in GoR. I hope Liza will win BA too. There’s no other characters or actressess have been ‘better’ than her this year.
Alice Chan, yes, I do like her. She has been enjoyable to watch in WoWY and LoS. I doubt she will win anything though. I don’t think she has much noise even after LoS.
@jjwong yeah I agree.
I thought there were noise for Alice from the interviews I watched, haha maybe reports exaggerated it. Maybe Rosina Lam should also be recognised, she could have been nominated under most improve actress too! Rosina used to act in small roles before her character in MLOR, so it’s quite impressive and she was quite watchable too.
Btw, I made a typo in my post above. It should be TV Queen instead of TV King, but I can’t edit it now.
@alien Heh, I figured you meant queen since you started talking about actresses.
Yes, I agree that Rosina needs to be nominated for Most Improve. She did well in the cycling series and wasn’t too shabby in MLoR.
Ooo, it’s nice if Alice does indeed have “noise.” I think she has better chance (rather my hope for her) for BSA than FFC. I don’t think she has the pull for FFC. Then again, there are so many past winners make no sense to me (i.e. Josie winning BSA). So IDK, maybe she’ll be an ‘upset’ and sweep both (highly doubtful), lol.
actually TV Queen award should go to Liza Wang.
as Ruco’s supporter, i am very happy for him to win 2 awards overseas. of course, i do hope he win the TVB King award as well.
@janet72 although I support Anthony for TV King. I do think that Ruco getting recognise and achieving those awards for his acting was a pleasant one. No doubt that his acting is better than many of the actors nowadays.Congrats to Ruco on the two awards.
Alice Chan for best supporting actress FTW! Most Improved: Jacqueline Wong…she’s been quite good this yr and esp adorable (if just a tad annoying) in WoWy. Or Rosina Lam or Eliza Sam or Kelly Fu. Most Improved & Best Supporting is more interesting to me cus there’s actually a bunch of good candidates this yr
@coralie Yea, to me lately MI and BS have been better with more qualified and interesting candidates.
Don’t forget about the guys. I hope Matt Yeung gets MI this year and Eddie Kwan for BS. Eddie is highly doubtful since he’s nominated for GoR and not LoS. That’s weird to me.
I only heard Ruco getting alot of recognise and achieving those awards from by his acting skills from Captain of destiny..
Wayne and Ruco I like the most..
Anthony Wong doesn’t do well in lord of shanghai..
because of his creepy voice and expression don’t do well..
compare to movie is good but not in lord of shanghai…
I am only supporting Wayne and Ruco best acting skills..
I only heard many people cursed at Anthony Wong acting in Lord of shanghai because of his weak expression and movement, or creep voice.. I hope Anthony Wong can learn more acting.. don’t be too old fashion again
@sojin000 I think Anthony Wong’s acting was very good in “Lord of Shanghai”. There was depth in his acting and facial expressions. The only thing I didn’t like as much was his voice in speaking Shanghainese. It was a bit high-pitched. His acting beat them all in “Lord of Shanghai”, though the other two (Kent Tong and Wayne Lai) lords were good as well. Kent was good throughout the drama series, and Wayne acted better when he was young. He over-exaggerated a bit at his old age.
Every artiste acted well in “Lord of Shanghai”. For female artistes, I liked Alice Chan and Jade Leung more in their characters.
LOS average rating pts is 25 and Captain of Destiny is 24.4. The 3 big guns in LOS cant obtain 40 rating pts is not considered a good drama, Foul mouth Uncle Anthony Wong had boasted that viewership would definitely be good, I’m positive TVB is disappointed with the results hahaha
COD viewership is good cos Ruco Chan is acting with inexperienced lead artistes…Woohooo.!
@yummysukiyaki Rating does not mean everything in a drama series. For Best Artistes Awards (TV King and TV Queen), acting counts the most and not the viewership ratings.
Ruco Chan was good in “Captain of Destiny” because his acting was compared with other artistes, such as Tony Hung and Grace Chan (new ones).
Anthony Wong’s acting was compared with veteran and experienced actors, not the same level.
@yummysukiyaki dude . Ratings does not show whether a drama is good or not .
LOS is way better than COD
@ivan @orchid123
Save your breath guys. You’re talking to someone that believe Ruco is a better actor than Anthony Wong.
All logic is lost.
@anon hahahahhahaha
@anon You are right. It is too hard to convince those idol fans regarding good acting. They care more about their idols’ looks than their acting skills.
@anon LOL…yea, save your breath, as this yummysuki person sounds like an immature teenage fangirl/boy – no point in trying to having a mature discussion with him/her. And for him/her to mention 40 point ratings as the ‘standard’ — I LMAO’ed at that one! This person is obviously not in tune with current HK television environment (too blinded by Ruco obsession perhaps?). Even TVB themselves have stopped touting the 40 point thing and have lowered their standards to “high 20s” as being ‘celebratory dinner’ worthy…so for that person to make the ridiculous claim that LOS is not a good drama because it didn’t achieve 40 points – sounds like a ‘troll’ comment to me….
@yummysukiyaki When a veteran actor (Ruco Chan) acts with inexperienced lead artistes, it is surely easier to showcase whatever acting he has (as long as his is better than those newbies’).
(Formerly known as TH…..something, account was deactivated..:):)
I am a Ruco fan for many years and no matter what , I will support him in all his dramas.Am glad that he was crowned Best actor both in StarHub and Astro as we know he was v popular in Singapore and Malaysia. He fully deserve it as just acting imo is good.
After watching COD and LOS, though I am a Ruco fan, I must admit that LOS Is a much better plot that COD.
The 3 uncles in LOS whom some of you called them, are impressive especially Anthony Wong (fyi, he not my idol:)). His acting is not only convincing but he can reali bring out the character with ease . Certainly he is better than my idol Ruco .
As for Kent and Wayne, they are not that bad except that Wayne performance this time round is not that outstanding.In term of acting skill, Ruco is still fare below them but he is still young compared to them and eventually he should be able to reach their standard . However , Ruco acting is much better than Chen Hao and Ron Ng, and slightly fare better than Kenneth Ma.
My view,The reason why COD is able to get so many award is not bcoz it is a fansatic drama but is Ruco factor. ( in fact it is below a number of dramas as shown by the ratings from HK VIEWERS) . He has a huge fan base both in Singapre and Malaysia which was his strong point. I believe many of us watched COD is bcoz of him and I dare to say that without him in the drama, many of us would not even on the TV.
But fact is still fact, LOS is still a better drama than COD and that imo, Anthony should clinch the award in HK though I would want Ruco to get it:)
@rcel Why can’t there be more open minded and accpeting Ruco fans like you? Lol.
I agree with what you said with the exception that Ruco is only “slightly fare better than Kenneth Ma.” Ruco surpassed Kenneth IMO. I find the latter’s acting skills very limited. On top of that, I was so distracted by the dub (not fault of his) but his acting in LoS was okay at best. Though I do appreciate how he tried to micmic Anthony with subtle expression and speak more with non-verbal queues. However, overall Ruco is a stronager actor than Kenneth imHo.
@jjwong
Agreed! Ruco is leaps and bounds better than Kenneth. Ruco has a much wider range of expression in his acting than Kenneth, hence has a much higher ceiling of elevating his acting to another level. I can’t say the same for Kenneth and most actors at TVB though.
@jjwong lol, actually I have been writing my views of all the siu sangs acting skill sometimes back under a different account , but somehow my account was deactivated:)
Chen Hao- overrated by TVB ( sorry chen Hao fan- dun bash me). His acting if u notice, is v stiff . Bt perhaps TVB “top one” has that perception that he was good , thus was given many opportunities. I will nvr watch his dramas .
Raymond Wong- another stiff one in acting
Raymond Lam- fairly good but left TVB
Ron Ng- was heavily promoted by TVB initially but fade away . Anyway he is not a versatile actor though I dun dislike him.
Roger Kwok- veteran actor with good acting skill but I dun fancy his dramas.
Wayne Lai- I was v impressed with his acting in No Regrets. Quite like his acting but still will not watch all his dramas if the plot is not nice.
Kenneth Ma- average acting but was quite impressed by his role in LOS
Kevin Cheng- ok, some of his dramas are still watchable.
Bosco Wong- dun reali fancy his drama
Conclusion
Unlike all the above siu sangs that I mentioned, Ruco starting line was not as smooth as them. He was in 2nd line or 3rd line status for quite sometime before he proved himself. Even in COD I got the feeling that TVB “top ones” wanted to give Bosco a chance to shine and maybe as a platform for the TVB award in HK by casting him as main lead but he pulled out due to work schedules. imo, Ruco was jus a 2nd lead in COD as planned initially but he prove his worth ! This is something I respect him despite not v well utilized by TVB. I am not sure if TVB failed to recognize Ruco talent and drawing power ?
Ruco fans- it will be sometimes before we get to watch his dramas:(
@rcel If you really want to, I’m sure you can email Jayne about getting your old account back.
Unlike you, I don’t really put my review on siu sangs. I only chime in when someone is overly zealous about their idols with irrational comparisons and blinding/hurtful words lol. Anyways, I disagree on some of your assessment on the actors. Everyone has their own likes or dislikes though, so that’s okay. It all can be very subjective anyhow.
I disagree on “Ruco starting was not as smooth as them.” I assume “them” are the actors you’ve mentioned above. Wayne (maybe also Roger to some extent) didn’t have a “smooth” journey to stardom. Wayne started as support and remained stagnant for a long time. Even after he returned to TVB, he stayed in the background. It wasn’t until Rosy Business that gave him the break. IMO, he wasn’t really a lead in RB. RB was all about Sheren Tang. At best, he was a hefty supporting character. Regardless, I’m glad he finally got recognized and shot him to the top. I liked him since his yester-years. So no lost there.
@jjwong agree with you. However , I dun bash artiste but just to share my opinion which I do not expect everyone to have the same view as me as each and everyone have their own preference of artiste :).
@rcel BTW, I didn’t mean you’re the bashing one. Just saying what I usually do in general.
@jjwong no worries. I noe. lol
I am a fan of Anthony, as much as I like him as an actor, he is first and foremost a movie star, not a TV actor and is not a management artist of TVB. I don’t see any reasons why TVB will award him with the BA award, especially when Anthony had repeatedly said that this will be the last and only TV series he would film with TVB, and that he only agreed to film in the beginning to return a favor to one of the TVB execs, and not for TVB itself. But again, weirder things had happened before, like Dayo Wong winning BA. That was just bizarre.
@anon Dayo AND Josie Ho. I don’t understand those 2 wins at all… They’re not bad. I actually enjoy watching Dayo. He sure as hell didn’t merit a BA, neither did Josie with BSA. It’s mind boggling! @_@ Lol.
@jjwong They won because they were excellent actors in their given roles. Dayo was the deserving and to me a surprising winner.
@funnlim Oh, I’m not saying they’re not good actors. I like Dayo and don’t dislike Josie. I just didn’t think their acting and role that year were enough merit for the award.
Wow, such a long thread on Ruco vs Roger. Roger won TV King thrice for Square Peg 1, 2 and BHWS, I agree that those 3 are his representative works. Wayne won thrice as well for Rosy Business 1, 2 and The Confidante, I am more impressed by his performance in Will Power, the post-stroke scenes showed how good an actor he is.
May I appeal to the over zealous Ruco’ s fans to stop bashing other artistes and puuting Ruco on a pedestal. That is certainly NOT what Ruco wants. By doing so, you are inviting others to bash him as well. Many Ruco’ s ardent friends (including myself) are aware that Ruco has still a lot more room for improvement and he has himbly mentioned that he will continue to work hard and learn. We love Ruco not becoz he is the best, which he certainly is not, but for the traits that we admire n we should not expect others to admire thesecsame traits.
Winning overseas award is difficult, I’m glad talented Ruco have gained recognition beyond H K. Ruco 好厉害!
Receiving award in H K alone is not enough, getting overseas awards widen the actor’s outlook and fame. Congrats to Ruco cos he has achieved it.
@yummysukiyaki It’ okay to support your idol but there is no need to degrade other actors to prop up your idol.
@yummysukiyaki He has yet to receive any award in HK. For some actors perhaps recognition back at home is more important than overseas. He will win it one day. just a matter of time.
