Why Zhang Ziyi’s Parents Disapproved Her Marriage with Wang Feng

Currently on air, Viva La Romance 2 <妻子的浪漫旅行2> attracted much attention for giving viewers a look at celebrity marriages. This marks the first time Zhang Ziyi (章子怡) revealed her private life in a reality show. Married in 2015, Ziyi shared that her parents did not approve of Wang Feng (汪峰) and thus it caused a strain in her relationship with her parents.

Because Ziyi wanted to live her own life, she disregarded her parent’s disapproval and went ahead with the marriage. Ziyi explained that her parents were not supportive of the marriage because Wang Feng was divorced, “It’s because he was married before. He already has children from his previous two marriages. Back then I didn’t get along with my family and I didn’t dare to mention his name.”

Sadly, Ziyi’s parents still did not accept Wang Feng even after their marriage. To add to the difficulties, her parents were living in the same in an apartment directly above the couple. Remembering an incident, Ziyi shared, “We were renting a place and it happened to be the unit below. We would go upstairs [to a restaurant] for dinner. When the elevator opened, I saw my parents and one of my relatives. I was so embarrassed.”

Adding his own take on the incident, Wang Feng added, “It was hard to find the words to say to each other; but it’s also very awkward to not say anything. In the elevator, I was just hoping that the time would pass by faster. Her mother was determined to not mention my name at all. Whenever someone mentioned my name to her, she would rush the person.”

As Wang Feng wanted to mend his in-law relationship, he treated Ziyi’s parents as friends and often invited them to vacations. Whenever his mother-in-law had problems, Wang Feng stood up to the plate to help them. Eventually, Wang Feng’s actions won them over and earned their approval.
