Yoyo Mung to Portray Firefighter in RTHK Series

Since dating Ekin Cheng (鄭伊健), Yoyo Mung (蒙嘉慧) has noticeably decreasing her filming output. It appeared that Yoyo preferred to challenge herself in her project selections. In the new RTHK drama, Elite Brigade 2 <火速救兵II>, which was based on real life fire incidents, Yoyo will portray a female firefighter.

Revealing that she actively sought out the opportunity to secure the firefighter role, Yoyo stated, “When I realized that RTHK was casting for Elite Brigade 2, I contacted the producer, who said that I fit the role as well. I have met female firefighters in real life and find them to be outstanding! The male and female firefighters treat each other as equals. I know that I will never be able to become a firefighter in this life!”

To meet the physical requirements for the role, Yoyo has been training deligently. Despite her fear of heights, Yoyo practiced sliding down the fire house pole.  Due to the filming of upcoming dangerous scenes, boyfriend Ekin Cheng advised her to be careful.

Indicating that she did not have to work on Valentine’s Day, Yoyo will be celebrating with a group of friends, which made the restaurant reservations easier to book.

Jayne: Yoyo has mastered playing police officers onscreen; I can imagine she will make a convincing firefighter. How is the quality of RTHK dramas?

  1. The English title is: “Elite Brigade” aka F.S.D. (Fire SpeeD 2.

    1. The quality of RTHK dramas is actually gotten better recently, up to par with TeeVeeBee

    2. Larry, wow you follow RTHK dramas too? Are they usually 20 episodes in length as well? Thanks for the English title tip.

      1. No, RTHK on TVB Jade channel in Hong Kong only shows one episodes per week on certain timeslot. And usually series drama is just varies ranging from 5 to less then 20.

The recent RTHK series that I watch was RTHK’s ICAC 2011 series, which it is a bigger improvement then TeeVeeBee version.

  2. “Yoyo has mastered playing police officers onscreen;”

Jayne, I seriously disagree with you. The last time I saw her as a cop I laughed. If I were a criminal I would never have felt threatened by her at all.

      1. Fala just can’t be a policewoman, or take on any professional role. I think Kate is fine playing cop, and so is Yoyo!

      2. Fala is too graceful, looks more like office lady than police superior. Kate is okay as cop because of her tomboy feel.

I found Myolie to be too girly for a cop role in “War of In-Laws 2.”

Wonder how Niki Chow will fare in the upcoming “Policewoman Love Battlefield.”

Although “Armed Reaction” was quite memorable, I didn’t find either Esther Kwan, Joyce Tang, or even Ada Choi as convincing police officers. They look too glamorous, too feminine, not tough enough.

Jessica Hsuan is fine as a cop and we’ll likely see her throwing her weight around in “Flying Tigers.”

      3. @sure-lee,

kate can’t pull out the cop role good, her looks is too chic more like a “lengmo” rather than a cop to me.

      4. @Jayne,

kate doesn’t has this tomboy feel in FH3, she looks more like some lengmo, the way she dresses, her hair, high heels boot etc are just way too unlike a lady cop..

      5. Kate will be fine as cop, if they didn’t make her look as though she spent one hour every morning curling her hair. That type of hairstyle needs maintenance. But her boyish look in TA was good.

I agree with jayne that Esther (Too Gentle), Joyce (Too Feminine) and Ada don’t make good cops.
        Fiona Sit – Kid
Joey Yung – WAYYYYY too much make up
Tavia – Too much make up
Charmaine – can pull off tough but spends too much time trying to look cool.

Best female cop in recent years – Sonija Kwok.

Linda up as a cop next. LOL.

      6. @Nicole

I agree with the Kate and her hair-curling part. Fiona Sit indeed looks like a kid, or at least in The Academy she did. Tavia too much make-up? Maybe in recent dramas, but not so much in TMOL where she played cop. And Charmaine, I liked her cop role in FH2, although I totally agree with you about how she spends too much time trying to look cool. It’s almost like she plans out her moves, to look exactly how she needs it to. IMO, a cop should be more natural and a little more careless in terms of looks.

      7. @Nicole,

Linda got the body of a lady cop alright but not her face though. her face is still too sweet looking not convincing enough as tough lady cop.

Kate is ok minus off those curly hair, ankle length boot with heels and tight outfit showing off her S shape body.

      8. I guess its just too hard to find a suitable fadan to act as a tough lady cop nowadays..

      9. @ sure-lee

“Tavia too much make-up? Maybe in recent dramas, but not so much in TMOL where she played cop. “

I think Tavia wear too much mascara in TMOL.

      10. @Kidd

LOL alright, well, I don’t really consider heavy mascara as too much make-up. Even if it’s heavy, it can’t be thaaat heavy, if you get what I mean…

      11. @Veejay

I find Linda to be too tall for a cop, and her face is too sweet and gentle.

      12. Tavia? Too much foundation.

Linda? She played a troubled girl with a bad past and it was her best performance. So I will say Linda can do it.

      13. @ Veejay

“kate doesn’t has this tomboy feel in FH3, she looks more like some lengmo, the way she dresses, her hair, high heels boot etc are just way too unlike a lady cop..”

That’s the fashion problem. But, have you see her other cop roles like in ‘On the First Beat’, ‘A Great Way to Care’, ‘When Lanes Merge’?

      14. @sure-lee,

Tall is better than shorter cop rite? so its ok.

        @Kidd,

Yeah I’ve seen her past role as lady cop, her hair was short rite and less makeup. She was more “convincing” as lady cop in her previous series but not now anymore with that Glamourous fashion sense.

      15. Agree with Nicole on Sonija being a cop. Even when her acting was not very good, she still look convincing as a cop.

      16. @sure-lee
Tavia wore too much mascara, foundation and lip gloss in TMOL. So did Joey Yung. They look so weird with their dolled up faces – curled eye lashes, thick foundation, and thick shiny lip gloss trying to portray cops. I thought Joey looks comical as she had to wear the uniform, her hair tucked in her hat, with that made up face.
        http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a169/girlie18/Asian%20Celebrities/se02071208_big.jpg

Comparatively, Sonija looks quite serious in her role as senior cop, unlike Kate who looked like fashion model and Fala who looks like little girl with her pedal-pushers . Sonija can also play tough cop well, as she was great as the tomboyish, bumbling cop in DIE.

Tall cop is good. What you expect? Tiny cops?

      17. Nicole,
Tavia may have worn too much makeup in “The Mysteries of Love” but that was the stylist’s fault and the director’s fault for allowing it to happen. I doubt Tavia insisted on the thick mascara herself. Otherwise her mannerisms were quite convincing as a cop.

      18. Jayne,

I’m pretty sure tavia can tell the make-up artist how much make-up she wants. In all her recent series, she has the thick foundation, heavy eye makeup and lip gloss that almost touches the tip of her nose. Obviously she prefers that look. The only difference in MoL was that she had her hair in a ponytail.

As for policewomen, it’s easier to portray beat cop b/c of the uniform. CID needs to be tomboyish and senior inspector needs have to leadership skills. Kate can be the first 2 but not the third. Especially when she uses her girly voice, makes me laugh.

      19. It’s easier to be cops in uniform because the uniform help the look already before the artistes need to do anything LOL

      20. Niki look fine as a cop from pictures. She will do fine. I’m not sure about Linda because when she try to be badass she becomes a bit fake.

Agreed that Kate style herself too much and Fala look like a little girl in grownup clothes ROFL

      21. Yoyo and Sonija make better cops than current TVB’s big 5 fadans. They both don’t have great acting skills but I think their look and makeup are fine for cops.

      22. @ Vivien

You used to praise Fala very much. Now, your love have moved to Nikki? :p

      23. @Kidd

Fala is still the prettiest among the 5 fadans and possibly among TVB actresses now, but watching her trying to be madam is a joke ROFL

    1. Funn,
Yoyo has a tomboy feel, in both speech and mannerisms, that make her convincing as a cop. She’s a tad too thin and unconvincing when certain scenes show her taking down men twice her size. But her angry scowl and and tough feel fits the cop feel.

I think Tavia makes a decent cop too.

      1. Yup, I think Tavia makes a great cop as well, loved her role in TMOL!

      2. Yoyo is too thin and too pretty to be a cop. However, her speech, mannerism, and acting are so much better than Kate Tsui. She gives people a strong and straight-forward personality, and is fast in her action. Agree that Kate looked more like “some lengmo” in FH3. I couldn’t see her as a inspector or team leader in FH3 ….. unconvincing at all.

      3. @Sandcherry & Jayne

I actually think Yoyo is one of my favourite female actresses taking on the role of a cop. She has that look, and she’s not the too girly type. Tavia can also look tough when she wants to, and I feel like her eyes are just really dynamic. Also, Kate definitely has the moves for a cop LOL.

      4. Jayne, can;t remember which series it was she supposedly played a tough cop. Glaring, crossing arms and threatening people does not maketh a convincing cop. Sorry I really disagree.

      5. @Funn Lim

“Glaring, crossing arms and threatening people does not maketh a convincing cop.”

        Who are you referring to?

    2. I don’t think Yoyo is a good actress. But, I feel that cop role is one of the few roles that she played well.

      1. Agree with you. Yoyo does not have a good and clear voice to start with, and she is not good in her pronunciation of words. However, I like her portraying cops, a lot better than Kate Tsui, or Fala Chen, or Charmaine Sheh. Can’t remember Tavia portraying cop’s roles though.

      2. Yoyo acted pretty well as Leung Siu-Yau (an inspector) in Forensic Heroes I and II, a lot better than Kate Tsui in FH3.

  3. This is a pretty bad picture of Yoyo. Lack of make-up probably, and she looks a lot older.

    1. Yea, that is a bad photo of her. I wonder if it is because she has lesser make up on?? But if she is filming, wouldn’t she have quite a bit on?? Or does this role require her to have less on??

      1. It would look ridiculous if she was wearing 2 inch makeup as a firefighter. This is more realistic than TVB policeseries where female cops wear a ton of makeup and high heels, LOL

      2. I don’t like female cops wearing a ton of makeup, long curly hair, long eye lashes, high-heel shoes or boots, etc. They look more like models than female cops.

I guess that simple basic makeup is required for all artistes (male or female).

      3. Oh yea, this is NOT a TVB series… I keep on forgeting. TVB are not that realistic as we all know. I agree that wearing too much make up doesn’t make a woman look like a cop at all…

      4. It seems these days that the required basic makeup equal 2 inch of heavy makeup at least for most of it fadans (TY, Kate & Myolie).

Alot of Hollywood actresses sacrificed their looks in order to make a movie more realistic e.g. Halle Berry and Charlize Theron for instance.

Especially for Kate why basically play on her supposed sexiness alone can’t have the audience see her au naturale. Perhaps its for the best since many viewers would prolly get a stroke, LOL

      5. Kate did look very pretty in FH3 though. But we can just cut Ron and her scenes and plop them into Wax and Wane, and no one will be able to differentiate between the two. As her characters were the same, and FH3’s cop was just as pretty if not prettier than WW.

    2. Wow, agreed. I had to look twice just to make sure it is her! What happened!?

  4. Recently watched ICAC 2011 which was coproduced with TVB. Very good show with 5 episodes, so my impression of RTHK is very good.

    1. Is RTHK a new company in HK?? I suddenly don’t remember much about them… Their name sounds familar though.

      1. It seems like a public TV channel which is run as a separate organisation and changed its name a few times already according to Wiki.

      2. Thanks and I just looked up some info about them… Great to know that they are fliming series as well.

    2. No, TVB did not co-produced ICAC 2011. It is strictly RTHK production. It is presented on TVB Jade channel.

  5. The best female cops in Hong Kong cinema are the athletic ones, such as Michelle Yeoh, Moon Lee (李賽鳳), Cynthia Leung (杨丽菁)where you can see their fit forms and their punches have real power. In the 1980s, “girls with guns” was a popular genre in Hong Kong cinema. I miss the athleticism of these 80s icons. Human athleticism is exhilarating to watch

Not some dainty form hiding behind the office desk or carrying file folders in suits. That’s more like a “vase” inspector.

    1. I agree and it is sad that Cynthia Khan/Yeung is now retired. I am not sure if Moon is still acting or not.

  6. Michelle Ye played a cop in a movie before, she didn’t play the chief inspector, but she was convincing. She didn’t have makeup, or it didn’t look like she had on any, and it was realistic.
I think Maggie Shiu can definitely be a cop, even a chief inspector. She’s played one many times.

    1. Which movie was that?? I think Michelle Ye can definately play a cop well. Her personality in real life is really tough as well..

      1. The movie called Fire of Conscience, the one with Leon Lai. She acted as Leon’s subordinate. Run 7 streets in one breath. She also cut her hair short.
