Zhou Xun to Star in “Legend of Zhen Huan” Sequel
Mainland Chinese actress Zhou Xun (周迅) will star as Empress Ulanara in the upcoming period drama, Ruyi’s Royal Love in the Palace <后宮如懿傳>, which can be considered a sequel to the popular palace intrigue series Legend of Zhen Huan <後宮甄嬛傳>.
Set during the Qing Dynasty, Ruyi’s Royal Love in the Palace is based on a novel by author Liu Lianzi (流瀲紫), who also penned the novel that was later adapted into Legend of Zhen Huan. The drama tells the story of Lady Ulanara, who was originally a concubine of the Qianlong Emperor and was eventually promoted to Empress after the death of his first empress.
The drama’s production company, New Classics Media, announced yesterday that Zhou Xun had officially signed on as the female lead of Ruyi’s Royal Love in the Palace. It had previously been rumored that the role would go to Li Bingbing (李冰冰) or even Legend of Zhen Huan star Betty Sun (孫儷).
Rumors also spread that mainland Chinese actress Crystal Zhang (張天愛), who rose in popularity following her 2015 web drama Go Princess Go <太子妃升職記>, had auditioned for Ruyi’s Royal Love in the Palace. In response, New Classics Media stated that the cast and crew had not yet been established, but they did not eliminate the possibility that Crystal would play a role in the drama.
Ruyi’s Royal Love in the Palace will begin filming in August and is expected to be broadcast in 2017. This will be Zhou Xun’s first TV role since she starred in Red Sorghum <紅高粱> in 2014.
