“Bullet Brain” Pushes TV Boundaries With Bold Scenes

Acclaimed producer Lee Tim Sing’s (李添勝) Bullet Brain <神探高倫布> will air on Monday, April 8. The period fantasy drama stars Wayne Lai (黎耀祥) as Detective Columbo, the slow-witted police officer who transforms into a brilliant detective after he gets shot in the head. The series also stars rising artists Ngo Ka Nin (敖嘉年), Sire Ma (馬賽), Edwin Siu (蕭正楠), and Natalie Tong (唐詩詠).
Heavy taste, a recent Hong Kong slang term that is used to describe visual media that depicts elements of graphic violence, sexuality, and other disturbing, adult-friendly genres, will be briefly touched upon in this 25-episode serial.
In the latest issue of Sudden Weekly, the magazine spoiled some shocking plot details of Bullet Brain. Although these “heavily tasted” spoilers are neither very bold nor too extreme for TV, some can be quite alarming.
First Five Episodes
Wayne leaves the countryside to become a police officer in Hong Kong. His best friend Ka Nin, also a police officer, shows him around Hong Kong and takes him out to eat. At the restaurant, an escort, portrayed by Snow Suen (孫慧雪), is invited to dine with them. Snow touches Wayne’s leg and feels up to his crotch.
Soon afterwards, Wayne is rushed to the hospital after getting shot in the head in order to protect Ka Nin. Wayne miraculously survives in the crossfire, but the bullet fragments that are trapped inside his head triggers the area of the brain that specializes in intelligence. Wayne’s IQ rapidly rises from 100 to 283, and he turns into a brilliant but cold-blooded detective who has a 99 percent crime clearance rate. Wayne will occasionally suffer from seizures; when they occur, memories of him as his old self will flash into his head. He will also have memories of Natalie, his first love.
Natalie, Wayne’s childhood sweetheart, never had true feelings for Wayne. Natalie loathed her life in the countryside and only had eyes for money. After meeting a rich heir, she harshly breaks up with Wayne and marries the business magnate. However, Natalie’s husband was abusive, and years later, the now 40-year-old Natalie leaves her husband and returns to Hong Kong to work as a courtesan.
Meanwhile, Sire – Wayne’s superior – is ordered by higher officials to spy on Wayne, who is deemed as dangerous. The highly intelligent Wayne sees through Sire’s plan and finds ways to get rid of her. In one scene, Wayne forces Sire to go after a criminal in a boat chase. Sire has motion sickness, and after the boat ride, she throws up over the beach. In another scene, Wayne secretly slips a cockroach under her dress. Sire goes hysterical, and Wayne uses this opportunity to save the damsel in distress. Sire’s admiration for Wayne increases, and she loosens her investigation on Wayne.
Next Five Episodes
The middle-aged Natalie meets Wayne again, whom she has not seen in twenty years. Realizing that Wayne has now become a successful, crime-solving genius, Natalie immediately regretted her decision in breaking up with Wayne twenty years ago. Insecure of her own looks and jealous of Sire’s youth and beauty, Natalie flies to Japan to undergo plastic surgery. Her youth restored, Natalie comes back as a beautiful dance courtesan.
Throughout the series, Natalie will use her newfound youth and beauty to seduce Wayne. There will also be a scene where Natalie will flash her breasts at Wayne, and her bare back will be revealed to the audience.
Sire will have a separate romantic story arc with Edwin, her partner in crime. In a criminal-chasing scene, Sire almost gets strangled to death by a thief. Edwin will save Sire through CPR. Their “kissing scene” is reported to last for at least two minutes.

Why tvb why? Does these bold scenes really generate viewers? Tvb is so not a family oriented channel anymore. At least there’s no rape scene for once

There should be a rape scene as Natalie mentioned in an interview, she will be raped by Pierre.
I second you, girl. Using “bold scenes” to generate viewers is not a long-term success plan (especially when the “bold scenes” are useless and artless). Good scripts and solid acting are the things that gives TV series classic acclaim. Unfortunately, since TVB prefers to recruit beautiful and ditzy pageant contestants rather than true acting talents…their female leads generally do better at stripping/being raped than acting.
I don’t why know TVB likes to release so many spoilers. Doesn’t that affect ratings?
i think the effect is supposed to make you anticipate the scene in action after reading it in words. my mother loves spoilers for this reason.

hoping that Wayne will play some more series so that I can watch his series more often.
Agreed… Wayne is one of my favourite actors, and this series seems to play to what I think are his strong suits. Will be great to watch.
i used to feel wayne is great but now i’m slowly dislike and getting tired of his one note acting. not keen of natalie as the female lead either but sire ma is quite likeable.
These news reports over exaggerate scenes. They almost never live up to the hype. If these so called heavy taste scenes are upsetting viewers then HKTV is destined to fail. All their trailers look more bold than Bullet Brain.

while wayne deserved to win last year, i’m getting to slowly dislike his acting. he’s turning into a one note actor! not looking forward to this but still looking forward to rosy3 because of myolie and edwin!

This is weak. What TVB needs is not daring naked women prancing on the tv screens. What TVB needs to do is push the boundaries on sensitive topics and bring those topics to light. Mainland-HK culture shock is a good start. Another one would be Gay marriage.
I concur. Instead of using all the rape/bare backs to generate hype, maybe they should focus on same sex marriage and offer viewers a chance to see the dynamics of one. Perhaps one on male rape – they exist and is extremely underrepresented. I remember TVB trying something like that but it was forgetful like the rest of the bold scenes we’ve been seeing.
Besides Wayne Lai, Ngo ka Nin is good too; Natalie Tong is not good enough to be a leading actress opposites Wayne lai but I saw the good chemistry between them when she acts as Wayne Lai’ litle sister in King Maker so that it may generate better chemistry as they play “lovers” in this series. No matter what I still can’t wait for this series because I am so addicted to Wayne Lai acting skill. I watched “Season Of love” and was very disappointed because of KM acting skill; he should put more effort in acting so that he can compete to Wayne Lai for TV King this year.
I’ve been craving to see Wayne do an evil role after seeing the repeated roles in recent years (Rosy Business 1, 2, and King Maker were too similar). I think this might be the closest I’ll come to getting my wish. Hope his character is more ruthless than these articles have been making him out to be.

When reporters asked Wayne Lai, he says he’s not lucky, he couldn’t see anything, the audience are lucky as they saw her bare back, but hey, dude, you have her all naked for full frontal view!!! Not lucky????? Yoohooo,…

Just watched the first ep and I love Wayne’s character. He’s ruthless for sure! So funny how he tries to hold Pierre’s hand 😛

The reason it took so many hours to film that rape scene in Friendly Fire was probably because the actress was so hopeless!!
