Hawick Lau’s “The Wife’s Secret” Racks Up Praise

After airing on March 17 on Hunan Satellite TV, The Wife’s Secret <妻子的秘密>, which stars Hawick Lau (劉愷威) and Zhao Liying (趙麗穎), has successfully gained a loyal following and incited tens of thousands of related online discussion posts.

The Wife’s Secret focuses on the story of Jiang Baihe (Zhao Liying), who is to be engaged to her childhood sweetheart Li Minglang (Hawick Lau), the successor to his family’s company. However, a fire leads to the death of Baihe’s family and deals a heavy blow to her family’s business. Minglang’s mother (Liang Li 梁麗) pressures him into breaking off the engagement, but he insists on bringing Baihe home.

Under Minglang’s guidance, Baihe rekindles her self-confidence and courage, and their romance blossoms. Unfortunately, this sparks the jealousy of Ning Xia (Wang Zhi 王智), a secretary who has always nursed a crush on Minglang. Minglang also faces opposition from his younger brother, Li Tian (Ding Zijun丁子峻).

By combining some of television’s most well-known and beloved tropes, The Wife’s Secret seems to have hit the sweet spot, especially among young female audiences, who are attracted to the fairy-tale love story, eye-catching scenery, and good-looking cast. After premiering with a respectable 1.18 rating, the drama has since risen to 1.37 in the ratings and has taken the top spot in online views.

The Wife’s Secret has been the topic of much online discussion, with related forum posts numbering up to 160,000. The series, which landed in the top three in the drama rankings list on Baidu Tieba, has also spurred discussions about real-life scenarios regarding conspiracies and the secrets of wives.

Although some viewers have commented that The Wife’s Secret is a little too fast-paced, the majority of the audience prefers a fast tempo to the alternative, saying that the series remains addictive.

  1. Don’t know about China ratings but they make it sound 1% is alot for a country of 1 billion+. Compared to the U.S who is more ridiculous by saying 8mil avg for a 300mil+ country.

I know there are alot of China channels too but its beyond exaggeration. Don’t understand how they pay their actors alot too.

    1. Well, I guess you’d have to look at the income disparity as well. I presume a huge percentage in China are still living in poverty and not everyone owns a TV.

Anyway, I’m not even entirely sure on how TV ratings work, let alone in China.

  2. Is it good? I quite like the actress.

“The Wife’s Secret focuses on the story of Jiang Baihe (Zhao Liying), who is to be engaged to her childhood sweetheart Li Minglang (Hawick Lau), the successor to his family’s company”

He has got to be the oldest childhood sweetheart ever.

  3. does anyone know or have the links to this series? I’m interested in watching it. Thank you.

  4. I enjoyed watching this drama, but man… Hawick’s acting makes me cringe. His face was expressionless, I had to guess what his emotion is and what he’s trying to express for the entire 6 episodes I’ve watched. I just couldn’t believe how bad his acting is… consider his wife, quite a decent actress, and his dad, a well respected veteran actor… I thought he would have learned some skills from them.

    1. Just because his father is a great actor does nit mean that he has to be. But yet he still makes big bucks which shows that success in the e circle is not just based on acting skills and talent. I think Hawick is ok as an actor since I have seen worse.

      1. Well said. I am generally not a fan of mainland modern drama. Anyway, just started watching a costume drama, Hawick is not that bad in the four scholars in jiangnan.

      2. You’ll understand when you actually watch this drama.

  5. I like Hawick Lau. He came a long way from being a supporting actor to main lead. Hope to see more if him the future.

  6. I’ve watched the 1st episode for like 15 mins and I feel there must be something wrong with the scriptwriter and the director! The bride’s (Zhao LiYing) parents and groom (Harwick Lau) leave the wedding reception (even before it started) because their factory is in flames! Then the bride chase after them and when she reached the flaming factory, she rushed inside looking for her parents! The absurd part is that nobody stops her! It’s like she has been trapped inside the fire from the start … shouting here and there with fire all around her! And then the groom on the way to the factory speeds like a F1 driver and hit something (I can only see it as a lump of sand) and said the bride’s parents dead on the spot! Oh man! What kind of plot is this? I feel so stupid just watching this!

And yes Harwick Lau just like ALL his previous drama, the face is like being injected with botok – EXPRESSIONLESS! Seriously! Watching him is really a torture to the eyes!

    1. gave up after the first ep, like you said, too riduculous, sure it’s fictional, but you can only suspend reality so far

    2. EXACTLY. I had to constantly guess “what’s he thinking right now” “how is he feeling at this moment”… I got so tired after just one episode. Nothing else could describe him but expressionless
