Huang Xiaoming’s “The Patriot Yue Fei” to Air in July
The anticipated historical period drama, The Patriot Yue Fei <精忠岳飛>, will begin airing on July 4. Produced by Stanley Tong (唐季禮), the drama will be mainland China’s first television drama to focus on the life experiences of the famous Song Dynasty military general.
Even before filming began, the impressive acting line-up had already attracted much attention from viewers. Mainland Chinese actor Huang Xiaoming (黃曉明) stars as the titular Yue Fei. The cast also includes Hong Kong actors Gallen Lo (羅嘉良) and Allen Ting (丁子峻), mainland Chinese actors Wu Xiubo (吳秀波) and Shao Bing (邵兵), and mainland Chinese actresses Ruby Lin (林心如), Cecilia Liu (劉詩詩), Viann Zhang (張馨予), and Cheng Pei Pei (鄭佩佩).
According to Huang Xiaoming, who is one of the drama’s investors in addition to the male lead, the part of Yue Fei is one that he has been anticipating for a long time. Although he is well-known for playing heroes in wuxia dramas, Xiaoming feels that this role is different. “Yue Fei is a hero who really existed in history,” he said. “He’s not like the warriors I portrayed in the past, who all had a legendary quality and were exaggerated and dramatized. The Patriot Yue Fei is a factual biography of a hero, and it conveys Yue Fei’s bravery and skill, as well as his loyalty and dedication to his country. It will give everyone that type of steadfast and unyielding spirit of a hero.”
Among the many actresses in The Patriot Yue Fei is mainland Chinese actress Ying Er (穎兒), who was invited by Stanley Tong to play the most beautiful woman in Jiangnan. Referred to as “the beauty of Jiangnan,” her character functions as a “gift” that is sent to Yue Fei. Netizens marveled at released stills of Ying Er in costume, and Stanley praised her ability to depict the elite culture of ancient China, which emphasized the appreciation of calligraphy, painting, music, Go, poetry, wine, and flowers.
Ying Er shared that she was extremely impressed by the research and detail that were put into the costumes of The Patriot Yue Fei. “Every time I came to the set, Xiaoming’s clothes were different,” she shared. “When I went to the costume room, it was simply a big warehouse. The standards that this drama has for every actor’s costumes are really excellent.”

Hm… I think Ruby Lin is more suited to play the most beautiful woman in Jiangnan.
i think so too but maybe they wanted someone younger?
I guess. after all, ruby isnt exactly young anymore.
I don’t think so and there are way more younger and more beautiful actresses in China so couldn’t they find anyone?? I guess they did not want to go through the effort to look due to the big population.
Sorry but Ying Er definitely shouldn’t be playing the most beautiful women… If anything her looks are ordinary nothing special. I think Ruby Lin should have played the role too! But it might be because of her age she was not cast for it.
Ruby should not be playing that role either because it is not like she is beautiful. There are many young and beautiful actresses that should have fit that role but they did cast them…
It’s true that Ying Er looks very plain. I don’t know why she is casted for all beautiful girls in series.
I am actually highly anticipating this and waited for so darn long!!
Can’t wait to watch this series, Seems like it’s been ages since it was announced and suppose to air.
drama nowadays that based on history are made with this wuxia feel, especially by mainland production. What is up with that kunfu learning shit? Can we get some accurate depiction please? I enjoy the Romance of the 3 kingdoms 1996 version the most. Top any other version that being dissed out today standard. Too much of Lord of the Rings look and bull shit incorporation of women that weren’t even part of historical textbook. I hate today history interpretation!!!
I hope this series is accurate to the history and all because so many China series these days are making up their own stories.
It will be in the sense he was a patriot who had to die in the ends of corrupted officials/enemies. In between everything is filler.
You mean most of the filler is made up? Do you have sources on this or just going by what mainland series usually do?
Would suck to know that what I’m watching is not factually correct. I was really looking forward to this series since I don’t know much about his history.
🙁
I like the ATV series about it made in 1994 because that one seemed more accurate to the books. I kind of doubt this one will be. Many of the series today just take the names and then make up the stories instead of basing it on history and the books.
Love Chinese series , more action. Unlike gay k dramas
The fact that Ling Er is playing Beauty of Jiangnan gets under my skin and makes me not want to watch this. Jin Sha or Su Qing would have been a lot appropriate than her, just my opinion.
I think Liu Yi Fei should play the most beautiful woman
