Roger Kwok on His Evil Role in “Black Heart White Soul”

After Roger Kwok’s (郭晉安) successful portrayal of the ultimate villain, Tong Lap Yin, in 2008’s Last One Standing <與敵同行>, producer Amy Wong (王心慰) cast him in a challenging antagonistic role six years later. The currently broadcast TVB thriller, Black Heart White Soul <忠奸人>, features Roger as Matt Ko, a physically-disabled lawyer who becomes a manipulative killer hiding behind a mask of kindness.

Roger’s portrayal of Tong Lap Yin from Last One Standing already sent chills down viewers’ spines. The final scene of his character stood out particularly as he was in jail with his legs paralyzed. Tong Lap Yin firmly pushes himself up while casting a sinister smile. Netizens highly praised his creepy performance as being exceptional. However, Roger believes that Matt Ko from Black Heart White Soul proves to be even more dangerous and unpredictable.

Matt Ko is not only meticulous, but also possesses superb IQ and EQ. Although his lower body is paralyzed, he is able to use words to achieve what he wants. After being entangled in a complex robbery case, Matt has no plans to turn back towards justice. In order to gain the trust of the boss of an organization, he does not hesitate to kill off his opponents.

As to how his character is able to commit murder l in a wheelchair, Roger preferred to keep it a secret. He expressed, “The audience should watch it for themselves. I can’t spoil it! The series’ setup took a lot of effort, and the script was also difficult to write.” Roger revealed that operating a wheelchair was not easy, and he had spent lots of time practicing the different moves prior to filming.

If there is one word to describe Matt Ko, Roger exclaimed he would describe him as someone very fake. The role was a challenge to carry out since he exhibits an extremely tough inner psyche. In order to properly grasp the role, Roger must effectively control his dark side while showing off a kind demeanor. He felt very proud to receive praise from TVB’s management executive, Catherine Tsang (曾勵珍), who said he was evil in a manly way.

Almost 50-years old, Roger admitted, “I’m really scared! Really scared that I’ll oxidize! There are some types of red wine that can no longer be consumed after twenty years due to oxidization, while others taste even better with longer air contact.” Instead of slowly fading away, Roger aspires to continue being a memorable actor. He expressed, “I hope I’m like a bottle of red wine that will make people reminisce its aftertaste.”

  1. I still can’t get rid of Roger’s portrayal of Ah Wong after so many years. He is now one of TVB’s veteran actors. How time flies…

  2. Roger did a great on playing this role he’s a great actor i do hope to see more of him filming for TVB beta then seeing all the noob that they are promoting nowadays

Its sad to see that more and more veteran actors are leaving SIGH….TVB series is not what it’s use to be anymore sorta say =(

    1. You dont blame tvb serioes is getting low standard. Its because of the world is changing and globalization. People nowadays having more options comparing with the people of older days. Last time HK actors will just stay HK producing drama or movie. But after 1997, they can move freely to China. That’s why you see gallen lo, and many others are moving to china for drama because of money as long as you can speak chinese. But before 1997, they will just stay at HK that and you can see High class drama, at the threshold of an era, The greed, and many others. Bobby au also can act very good but he is getting older and sick. So it got ntg to do with TVB , its the world is changing and the people. DUH, people just couldnt think..

      1. I somewhat agree and disagree with your POV. I agree that the world changed and talents ran from HK to branch into China. On the other hand, TVB should change and grow too. That’s how one can stay on top and remain relevance. If they lack talents, then “home grown” them. Provides acting classes or whatever. If they recycle script too much, hire outside writers. Pour some money in to revamp. If China can import outside talents, why can’t HK? Maybe HK doesn’t have the money, but entice them with other perks, or whatever.

They knew 97 was coming, they should expect to lose talents and they should have a plan. Instead, however, they didn’t because they think they have the monopoly, which they do. Look at how shaken they were when HKTV seemed to be a threat to them. They threw a whole campaign about how they’re improving and treating artists better, yada yada yada. Now HKTV is likely out of the run, they’re back in their old ways again.

The world changes don’t mean one should stand still.

      2. Do u expect TVB to pay more than china? Look at those drama produced by china, at least i anot interested at all. All drama acted by gallen lo at least cant attract me to watch it but they can offer high pay for the actors and actresses. You are not the TVB boss of course you can comment free without brain. You think in business world everything is 1+1=2. If yes then wont have winner or loser lar .Duh..

      3. No, I do not expect TVB to pay more. I said if HK can’t afford to win the talents with money, like China does, then they should impose some other perks. Maybe better working hours, housing, or whatever else they can think of to retain the talents.

And yes, I am not the TVB and neither are you. So we both can’t really tell what really going on behind their closed doors so my words are as good as yours in our own mind. Just as you accused my comment being said “without brain,” I can say yours, about TVB series aren’t “getting low standards,” are baseless and brainless as well. Do you think people with different view from you are “no brain”?

And yes, running a business is harder than it looks. I don’t claim to know everything about the world’s business. I’m just saying TVB needs to grow as the world changes. China opened their market, evolving, expanding and attracting talents, viewers, tourists, businesses, etc. From my perspective, I feel like TVB hasn’t change their way of business. If they don’t change for the better, they will be the loser and they have no one to blame but themselves.

  3. he’s such an awesome actor. he does well in all sorts of roles

  4. I think Matt may even win a car chase or a pursuit on foot. The most mobile person on a wheelchair. Frankly the fact that he is on a wheelchair isn’t so significant now.

    Anyway, poor poor Marco.

    1. yes poor marco, but i dont understand why she left marco in the end, because she choose marco for love above the money and now he is in trouble and immediately she left him and get back to her betrayed husband? its not really logical. so the true love isnt so true at all.and she is a pig.

      1. It is logical. Like Marco said, she left him once because he was dirt poor. She is leaving him the second time because he is in dire straits. In other words Scarlet is just a selfish woman who doesn’t know how to love and she deserves everything To Yee Hang will do to her. Poor poor Marco. There might be love, but not enough for someone who wants comfort, name, etc. Marco was ready to throw them all away for her, but she couldn’t do it for him. So in the end she is just a self serving person who is too selfish to know what real love is. Perfectly logical.

      2. hmmm,ok its understandable then why she left marco, but to go back to his husband again? a chinese saying “pig dog not worthy”,lol.

      3. Simply put, because the story has unfolded to show that Scarlet is a woman afraid of any hardship. She worships beauty, power and money and wants to have it all and most importantly, wants other people to see her have it all. She doesnt want to escape with Marco and live a life of anonymity, she wants to live a life of glory – either that her wealthy lover helped her trump her ex-husband or she resumes her place as Mrs To and people from the outside see it as a life of glory, even if she is denied any freedom.

    2. Hope to see Denise to play a more despicable yet silent role, given her royalty to Marco, and ‘beat’ the craps out of Matt and exposed him, would be perfect.

Like, never to underestimate a raging woman, or will be sorry. lol

      1. Interesting thought JJ! Was quite exasperated at how Denise was felled at every time she was trying to help Marco out as he was running out of options. But I doubt they will suddenly introduce such dimension to her minor character role so late in the show, because in the last few episodes they have already been focusing alot on Marco, Scarlet, Matt and Mr To, and less on their other key characters May and Funny. May and Funny have been flatlining the last few episodes so I think the ending episodes will see their character development amping up.

  5. He’s a great actor and has many many years left in him, I can easily see him becoming a best actor winner if he is allowed to move into movies.
His talents are wasted on tv with TVB scripts. I am afraid he is too loyal to TVB to leave though.

    1. another ignorant that couldnt have critical thinking. Those that still stay with tvb either because they cannot move freely. He couldnt survive in china because his chinese is weak. So he cannot do much. Unlike gallen lo. Not that he is loyal just he got limited option. Same like wayne lai forever stay HK and TVB..

      1. you are by far dumb as fuk.
limsted chinese? Wayne and Roger speak canto and mando fluently.
THEY choose to stay and be loyal to TVB because there family are living in HK.

      2. fluently ur ass lar. Show me the video they speak in chinese for chinese drama. Ignorant till noob sht indeed! duh

    2. Roger lacks the stature to star in movies and the movie industry are dominated by a few stars. The problem caused by piracy and access to foreign movies have saw a decline in the market. Less money, less movies and less opportunities.

  6. Roger doesn’t need to worry at all. He’s already a proven actor who has given us numerous memorable performances (I still remember many of his performances from the 80s and 90s as well as recent years). In fact, Roger is one of those rare actors where I’ve rarely ever been disappointed with his performance (I may not have liked some of the series he was in but I usually still enjoy his performances). Will definitely continue to support him!

  7. Like Bobby, Roger has achieved all he could at TVB. He films 1-2 series per year because he’s loyal to the company. But in no way is he limiting his career because he also films Mainland productions.

    1. Loyal is not the point as he got no other choice except tvb. Just like wayne lai. He still will stay in HK till old and TVB his only choice except movie.

      1. No. He still films for TVB because his family is in HK. It gives him a couple of months to be close to his wife and two kids. Wayne, on the other hand, doesn’t have a market outside of TVB.

  8. in my opinion rogers villain role here is not as good as in the last one standing.here i can see he is a villain and in last one standing i can’t.

  9. This is a rare masterpiece drama with lawyer , love and cop quite unique especially Matt the creepy and villain man if Ruco to replace Ron that will be a wOw ! to.this drama definitely box office for tvb.

    1. Agree but Ron is doing a really good job as well.. Ron role has nothing special to. It just a plan cop that ruco can do with his eyes closed

      1. Agree for that to special tailor for Ruco tvb script writer will add in more sugar and salt and excitement for Ruco’s role I guess.

      2. exactly,i only dont like his hairstyle.he looks like charmain seh with that.

    2. Wish to see roger and Ruco in a drama one day .. Hopefully next year

  10. well….i just wanted to say is that i quite like Roger’s acting he’s not bad and plus even i haven’t watch this film a lot of times he’s acting is very good!!!! 🙂

  11. Is it just me or are Roger’s roles in LOS and BHWS are quite alike?
6 years ago, I actually started to hate him (character), because he was just so evil and now I’m getting this feeling again..
Roger is a really good actor. 🙂

  12. Love Roger in a villain role as he nails it! Not many people can do both a good person and an evil person role and be convincing but Roger is def. one of them. Deric Wan was another too.. and Gallen Lo…

    1. And Francis Ng too…he has the crazy look on him whenever the takes on a villain role. He’s very versatile.

      1. To me, francis’ face always looks crazy, evil, mean and angry even in real life. He doesn’t look convincing to me when acting as a good guy.

      2. Anon, sure man. Anyway i believe IRL, he’s known to have somewhat of a bad temper.

  13. Finally a TVB series worth watching. Just like Last One Standing an interesting and exciting script.

  14. For all you know, Roger may have his legs treated with those monies he gets and walkable in the end, and continued with his cover up, and committed something nobody think he could have done.

This is just what I guess. lol

  15. I have never really liked Roger Kwok (personal thing, probably not objective) as I find it distracting that he gesticulates too much when acting and he always has this look of acting innocent and looking over-eager. Just don’t like him. But I think this role suits him though, the two-faced villainy.

    1. Why is my comment “awaiting moderation?” Was it the asterisks? Oops, i forgot about that!

    1. I hope he’s a contender for the best actor award. The year is not over yet, and not all series have been shown. I liked Steven Ma in SIACC. So far between the two, I’d choose Roger.
