Sheren Tang, Ada Choi, and Moses Chan in Love Triangle in “Beauty at War”

The cast of Beauty at War <金枝慾孽(貳)> attended a press conference to promote the upcoming palace drama. Lead actresses Sheren Tang (鄧萃雯) and Christine Ng (伍詠薇) looked regal and domineering in their full costumes, channeling their characters Consort Yu and Consort Dowager Shun. Moses Chan (陳豪) and Eddie Kwan (關禮傑) entertained the crowd with a live performance of Kunqu Opera, showing off results from months of private training with an opera master.

Sheren, who previously suffered from anxiety during filming, feels nervous about the premiere next Monday night. She told reporters that she has waited nine years for this sequel and is excited to see the new production. Earlier reports claimed that Beauty at War scriptwriters originally planned to develop a lesbian relationship between Consort Yu and her wet nurse Sheung Ling, played by Ada Choi (蔡少芬). The story line was ultimately canceled after Sheren strongly rejected the idea. Sheren quickly denied the rumors when asked to comment. She explained that she, Ada, and Moses will be involved in a love triangle, and viewers should watch the drama to find out more about their complex relationships.

To generate buzz for the new series, TVB even broke tradition and invited their former executive producer Jonathan Chik (戚其義) to the event. Chik addressed earlier speculations and clarified that Charmaine Sheh (佘詩曼) will not be making a guest appearance in Beauty at War. He had indeed invited Charmaine and Bowie Lam (林保怡) to film several recollection scenes, but the two were unable to participate due to schedule conflicts. Chik also expressed his hopes that his last TVB production will also be his best, and did not deny the possibility of working with TVB again in the future.

Moses also spoke to the press about girlfriend Aimee Chan’s (陳茵媺) recent experiences while filming in Malaysia. He said that Aimee is having a good time overseas and was never harassed on-set. Moses believes that it was simply the camera angle that stirred the gossips.

As for rumors about co-star Christine Kuo (苟芸慧) who was recently dubbed the third party in Aaron Kwok (郭富城) and Lynn Hung’s (熊黛林) breakup, Moses believes they are untrue and should not be taken seriously. Kenny Wong (黃德斌) and Katy Kung (龔嘉欣) also supported Christine at the event, saying that Christine is a pure and quiet girl and that fans should not believe in these baseless stories.

    1. I think tvb tends to integrate rape scenes and love triangles in all their upcoming dramas. c:

      1. Love triangles had existed for almost a decade in any drama series, but rape scenes were recently introduced to TVB drama series. I guess TVB want to make their drama series more sexy and appealing to their male viewers.

      2. I guess so, Sandcherry. I don’t mind it as long as that is not the main focus of the drama.

      3. I thought TVB had done rape scenes before, especially in the late 90’s? I haven’t been following TVB that intently in recent years so I’m not sure how “explicit” these latest rape scenes are though…

      4. Agree. TVB had done rapes before in their drama series but not in a lot of them. Recently they have introduced rape scenes in almost every drama series and they always exaggerate their rape scenes before the drama series is airing.

      5. Think its part of the TVB cycle:

90’s dramas with rape scenes – but I always felt that it was necessary part of the story and not gratuitous like these days.
        – Zu Mountain Saga
        – Challenge of Life
        – few of the 90’s Detective Investigation Files
        – Armed Reaction

      6. Also coincided with the virginity/purity cures poison period of wuxia shows.

  1. I wish Producer Chik were able to invite Charmaine Sheh and Bowie Lam to participate in “Beauty at War” as guest artistes. It would make the sequel more appealing and original.

    1. I agree! I really liked Bowie’s acting in in general.

      1. tvb should have cared more about bowie when he was around like the same way tvb cares for wayne this days.. cos once bowie won the asia tv king award and tvb didnt care about his victory he was like see ya later

  2. I look forward to watching this sequel. Best of luck, Sheren, in your new challenge …….. to make Consort Yu more glamorous and appealing. I hope this drama series will have high viewership ratings. “Beauty at War” is long overdue. It should have been filmed a year after the airing of the original, and the whole cast would be acting in the sequel.

  3. ” Earlier reports claimed that Beauty at War scriptwriters originally planned to develop a lesbian relationship between Consort Yu and her wet nurse Sheung Ling, played by Ada Choi (蔡少芬). The story line was ultimately canceled after Sheren strongly rejected the idea. Sheren quickly denied the rumors when asked to comment.”

I believe this to be true. Sheren did state her objection in public. Plus, both Sheren and Ada are staunch Christians. So, both also might not want to portray a lesbian relationship.

    1. Strange that they have no problem playing murderers, adulterers and abusers? I think as actresses they will be professional. So I like to believe that it was the producer or director’s choice not to stir up any problems so that they can air in China.

    1. “Laai ma” “milk mommy” the woman who breast feeds the babies…

  4. Recollection scenes? I thought this sequel is indirect. What would there be to recollect about with Bowie and Charmaine?

  5. I can so tell this sequel is gonna be sh*t by looking at the cast-chrisitne kuo is in it. she stuffs everything up.

    1. Probably she is the bullied concubine that will die by the 3rd episode? Somebody has to take up such a thankless role and perhaps her death scene will be her best acting moment?

  6. Ages of the lead characters in “Beauty at War”:

    Portrayed by:
    Sheren Tang – 鈕祜祿如玥 – 35
    Moses Chan – 高流斐 – 35
    Ada Choi – 布雅穆齊湘菱 – 33
    Kenny Wong – 佟吉海 – 30
    Christine Ng – 鈕祜錄宛琇 – 34
    Eddie Kwan – 雲秋玹 – 33

Therefore, none of them portrays really young characters.
