Wayne Lai to Film Two More Dramas in 2013

Although filming for Rosy Business 3: No Reserve <巾幗梟雄之諜血長天> wrapped just a few weeks ago, Wayne Lai (黎耀祥) is already thinking about his new dramas scheduled to begin shooting in mid-August. Despite criticism surrounding his recent detective series Bullet Brain <神探高倫布>, there has been no shortage of work for the three-time TV King. At a promotional event today, Wayne expressed excitement over his vacation plans, and revealed information about his upcoming projects.

Wayne attended ParknShop’s 40th anniversary celebration on July 24. As the supermarket chain’s spokesperson for four consecutive years, Wayne is happy in his role and shared that he received a pay raise every year. The actor hopes to continue his endorsement deal for the long term, and spoke positively of the retail chain at every opportunity. “I loved to shop at ParknShop with my mother ever since I was little. It is a great place to shop and to spend free time. I am also the longest-serving spokesperson for ParknShop. I hope to endorse them for another 40 years, and celebrate their 80th birthday together.”

ParknShop recently made headlines after rumors surfaced that its owner, billionaire tycoon Li Ka Shing’s (李嘉誠) investment holding company Hutchison Whampoa, is planning to sell the supermarket chain. Many Hong Kong citizens are concerned about the pending sale and its effects on the local economy. When asked if the potential sale would effect his endorsement deal, Wayne said, “Certainly not. We renew our contracts every year. I just renewed it three or four months ago. We won’t be negotiating a new contract until next year. If the company changes hands, I hope there will be another raise. TVB also changed owners. Big companies will only become better and better….”

After completing No Reserve early this month, Wayne is looking forward to his upcoming vacation. Speaking to the press after attending yet another event in Fuzhou, China on the very same day, Wayne said, “I haven’t taken a real vacation with my family for 15 years. I am really looking forward to our two week trip to Japan.”

Wayne further revealed that he will be participating in two dramas upon his return. He will have a guest-starring role in a new TVB modern series, helmed by famed director Wong Jing (王晶). The series is scheduled to begin filming in Tianjin in mid-August. Wayne will portray Liza Wang’s (汪明荃) first husband. The drama also stars Hawick Lau (劉愷威) and Edwin Siu (蕭正楠). In September, Wayne will return to Hong Kong to star with Louisa So (蘇玉華) in another new TVB series.

    1. @John: Yes and no…technically, this series is an ‘outsourced’ production — meaning that it’s being filmed by an outside company (Wong Jing’s company) but TVB has a stake in it in that they lend their actors/actresses to participate in it since they will have exclusive rights to air it as a “TVB production”. It’s sort of similar to what ATV used to do back in the day when they were still producing series….at the end of the day, it’s actually more accurate to say this is a ‘Mainland series’ rather than an HK/TVB series.

  1. Wow Hawick is filming in HK again, haven’t seen him in a while. Hopefully it’ll be good, not really a fan of Wong Jing’s previous work.

    1. Technically, it’s a Mainland series, as Wong Jing’s production company is located in Mainland and majority of the series will be filmed in Mainland (majority of the news outlets are referring to the series as “the Mainland series that Wong Jing is filming for TVB”, which is way more accurate than calling this a ‘TVB series’).

Also interesting that the cast has changed so significantly. Honestly, when the series was first announced, the ‘draw’ was really the return of Deanie Ip to the small screen — but since she dropped out of the project and was replaced by Liza Wang (WTH??), the series is no longer of interest to me. It will be nice seeing Hawick again, but then again, him alone isn’t enough to draw interest in this series.

      1. Oh, is this meant to be the series where Deanie collaborates with Kenneth? Shame she’s pulled out…

        ——————

My word, now that Wayne’s a leading man, he’s practically everyone’s romantic partner – no matter how young or old. Nothing wrong with age gaps though. (But I really liked seeing him on screen with Teresa Mo or Elena Kong.)

      2. @skinnymocha: Yup, this is the same series…Deanie Ip was replaced with Liza Wang and Kenneth Ma has been replaced by Edwin Siu. The only artist who was originally rumored to be part of the production and looks like is still part of the cast is Hawick Lau. The female lead is a Mainland actress I believe (one of Wong Jing’s ‘girls’).

Also, those of you who are tired of seeing Wayne again — well, he’s only guest-starring in this series, so you guys don’t have to worry…

  2. Wayne and Louisa will be a new combination. I’m interested in hearing more about this series.

    1. I love them in Anti-crime squad, hilarious couple in the drama

    2. Agree! Wayne should be paired with actresses like Louisa So and Crystal Tin (King Maker). Sire Ma and even Natalie Tong give off the “big brother, little sister” vibe.

      1. agree with u 2. I really dislike Wayne pairing up with Sire Ma or Myolie(gives me the shivers). And yes, he should be paired up with actresses like Sheren, Louisa, or Crystal Tin.

  3. I am happy to hear this good news; I am crazy for him. It has been long time not having any his series to watch since BB in April. I love Wayne lai, Francis Ng and Lawrence Ng; they all are excellent actors.

    1. I am happy for the news about Wayne. I am also crazy for him. He’s an excellent actor. I really wish he & Sheren could collaborate again in another drama, either it’s ancient or modern series.

  4. Wayne will be Liza’s first husband? Meaning Liza will have another husband?

    1. Selena will portray the young version of Liza, therefore, wayne’s character will be the husband of selena’s character.

  5. Wayne is only supposed to have a guest star role in Wong Jing’s drama

    1. that’s right! looking forward to see wayne in the new drama

  6. I used to like Wayne alot, especially during his supporting roles. Lately, he have been overhype and way overrated. Don’t get me wrong, he is a good actor but there are veteran actors (even in small or big roles) out there that are as good.

    1. I feel the same way. It feels strange that Wayne is a three-time TV King when so many leading actors before him were better actors yet didn’t receive any TV King awards just because competition in the recent years have been poor.

      1. I think it’s fair, his role in Rosy business & no regret was great, he so did deserved to be awarded as TV king. TVB young Siu Sungs right now are terrible

  7. true 2 that there are a lot of great veteran actors, but as the lead, they are somehow restricted and does not have much freedom to 发挥. As supporting roles, they have more, that’s why Wayne is so good with his roles. I can see that a lot of tvb young lead siu sungs/fa dans aren’t that great, but Wayne & Moses are considered to be the greatest ones

    1. @sheldon That’s a good point. I’ve often found supporting roles, whether the actor or the character, to be more likable.

Leads are restricted because it’s as if their every move will make or break the series. The character is usually poorly written (or too plain and stereotypical, “perfect guy/girl”) and, most times, the actors/actresses are not able to make changes to the character.

    2. Master in support roles, silly and overrated in leading roles.

      1. No. All leads are like that, Wayne is one of the best ones, the young tvb siu sungs are much worse. As well, he does a lot of heavy drama over the years, like king’s maker, the confidant, bullet brain , the so called rosy business 3. These are difficult to act, the young ones can’t handle them at all.

      2. agree with zoey and disagree with sheldon. prefer watching ron and kenneth more than old wayne. he was atricious to watch in forensic 3 and bobo brain.

      3. @sel_fi_wu
Well I prefer Wayne over Ron & Kenneth. I don’t really care that you like the young ones, but I do prefer Wayne who can act

      4. what else can i say sheldon if you are still fixated that wayne in bobo brain is acceptable. i think he’s unwatchable there. stop thinking that bad about current siu sang such as ron and kenneth, ron in triumph2 and kenneth in on call are much more better than wayne in bobo brain and forensic 3

      5. Ron & Kenneth are supporting character in TITS2. Still think Wayne is much better than them. It is true that current tvb siu sungs are terrible, most of the ones who can act left TVB already. No offense with Kenneth, but he was over exaggerated in three kingdom

      6. @sel_fi_wu
in forensic 3, Wayne was so much better than Ron

  8. Silly actor not leading material. Go back to your support roles.

    1. Wayne and the Producers who cast Wayne as leading actors are smarter than you because they are richer and more well-known than you. Nobody knows who you are but Wayne is recognized by thousands of fans around the world. I am not a Chinese like him but still admire his fabulous acting skill not like you who has the same country with him but always wants to dishonor him by your trash comments ; what a shame!

    2. @zoey. Well then I think the younger tvb siu sungs & fa dans bunch should be the supporting characters, since most of them aren’t leading materials, and have bad acting skills

    3. agree. used to like wayne but he got too overrated and big head after he receive fame as tv king. his acting was mediocre in forensic 3 even nancy more outstanding better than him and he hits it bad in bobo brain. can’t blame netizens for saying he’s better off as a suporting actor

      1. Bullet brain was so the scriptwriters fault, even if Wayne was not cast in the drama, it will fail even bigger & because with a very weak female lead

      2. @ sel-fi-wu, Wayne is not overrated. He is talented actor; In RB 1 and 2 he did a very good job and those two series got very high rating so that he deserved to be TV King for those two series. The third one were voted by HK viewers, if you say that Wayne is overrated it means that you think HK viewers all are silly and not smart as you?

      3. Bullet brain failed and it has nothing to do with the female lead at all it was a series based on bullet brain detective which was wayne role

      4. @lol
As you know the female lead took over half of the screen time in the entire drama. You could even say that Wayne was a supporting character in the series. He was most of the time in a coma. It was the weak female lead that dragged down the drama. netizen even dislike that Sire Ma taking all the screen time,

      5. sel_fi_wu
used to like wayne but he got too overrated and big head after he receive fame as tv king. his acting was mediocre in forensic 3 even nancy more outstanding better than him and he hits it bad in bobo brain. can’t blame netizens for saying he’s better off as a supporting actor
        ——————————————————————–
This is the first time that I agree with you. I share the same feeling with you. I think Wayne’s acting is overrated. He is good in acting certain roles, but he is not the magic TV King in every single role. His age, look, built and height have restricted him to act certain roles.

      6. Well in that case Wayne a supporting role in all of his other series because most of the other actor take on half of the screen time

      7. @lol
So wrong on that. In Bullet brain, everyone can see and it was obvious that Sire Ma took all of the screen time. In Wayne’s other series he has more screen time than Bullet Brain.

  9. Wayne is the best actor for leading role; The producers is smart when choosing Wayne over the other currently leading actors. I only watch the series in which Wayne plays leading roles.

    1. Same here! I don’t watch TVb dramas anymore, I only watch the series with Wayne or Sheren tang. He is the best TV drama actor.

      1. I watch all TVB series but the actor i like most is Wayne lai. He is so good in acting even in the Bullet Brain. I love the romantic scenes between him and Sirma. The aged gap between them made the story more interesting to watch because it gave something new and not always in an old- fashion way as usual. This series is still fresh in my mind despite having a lot bad mouth about it. Language speaking of Sirma was not good in the series and caused irritated for viewers but her acting was good and touching that left a deep impression in my heart too.

      2. I also liked Wayne in Bullet Brain, but do prefer he and Nat as a couple. Nat did a great job as Miu Miu. Their love story was so touching

    2. Wayne had many emotional scenes in BB only in the beginning and towards ending. I love all the emotional parts.

    1. his more experienced than tvb sui sangs watch wayne film in series as they were growing up.. you just cant compare wayne to tvb sui sangs

    2. u need people like wayne age the roles that he plays tvb sui sang cant play those uncle roles and wayne cant play young roles tvb sui sang roles

    3. in tvb, there are no whatsoever young roles or uncle roles as lead. Young roles always fails. TVB dramas are always about professional occupations, such as doctors, lawyers, police, and businessmen. So Wayne or the middle-aged ones can definitely take those roles.

    4. Wayne ur right Wayne is one of the best actors mature roles is what I meant when I said uncle roles but Wayne doesn’t need to act mature he is a mature guy

  10. I am not Wayne’s fan but each time I watch the series having his present as a leading actor I am always eager for the next episode until ending of the series; for the other series even with the present of many siu sang like KM,FN and Chilam I have no feeling of eagerness for the next episode at all.
